A very worthwhile choice. I found it a tad ghoulish, but the case can be made thats essential to the plot. I thought the philisophical stuff was a bit pretentious too, but i appreciate what they were trying to do. Certainly many think its the best RPG of all, and one of the best games of all. I did enjoy it, and found it a worthwile experience. I dont think you can go wrong.

    - Europa Universalis and EU 2 (swedish historian Peter Englund said he hadn't had so much fun since the days of Civ 1... 'Nuff said! )

I would say its the best game ive played apart from civ2, and gives civ2 a run for its money (as we say). But beware, it could well keep you addicted for awhile.

    - Anno 1503 - The New World

Having played this, but do have 1602. An enjoyable cross between a citybuilder and an RTS, but relatively slow paced, and not all that violent. I enjoyed it, though its quirky.

    - StarCraft (as I said I've played Homeworld: Cataclysm, another RTS in space, which I liked a lot + a collegue wants to kick my butt in MP... Yeah, right! )

I played SP only, and only got partway through the 1st campaign before i got eu2. I enjoyed it, and of course plenty of people rave about it.

    - Master of Orion 2 (a great game that I've played now and then... I really enjoy it except for those damn spies! )

Well, then, you know what its like.

    - Alpha Centauri (tried it a little and liked it; I even have a french version of it?!)

A classic, many say the best TBS, i found the game overly complex, and the story and atmospherics didnt draw me in enough to overcome the learning curve. I did play it several times, and may go back to it, but I did not like it nearly as much as Civ2. Still, if you want a TBS with a deep backstory, philisophical content, and lots of gameplay innovations and depth, you may like it.

          LOTM,

Thanks! There is no doubt I will enjoy SMAC. The hype was enormous... I followed cloesly the backstory about the voyage and the different factions as it was published on-line by Firaxis.

I only played it a little, though... I was too hooked on Civ 2 and found myself "translating" SMAC's features into Civ 2 equivalents when playing it.

Now that Civ 2 has loosened her grip somewhat I think I might enjoy SMAC for its own gameplay. However, I fear the TBS games as my time will be limited again soon enough...

SMAC, StarTopia, or MoO2 would be my suggestions.

StarCraft is not an RTS in space. That's Homeworld. StarCraft is a SF RTS. It's more like StarCraft is Aliens while Homeworld is Space Above and Beyond.

Alpha Centauri is very good because of Social Engineering and the Unit Workshop. It actually has a "national border" too. Old style Civ game brought to the logical conclusion, IMO.

                I sense a theme here...

SF as in "Science Fiction" or "Science Fantasy"? If it's the former, then you got me confused...

As far as I can tell, Starcraft rips off Warhammer 40K.

I'd reccommend EU2. It's an old game by now, but still lots of fun. And seeing people still playing Civ2, which is way older... Well, and if you are into WW2, HoI2 is a must I'd say.

Starcraft is most definitely Fantasy (no "science" involved). It's just a fantasy set in a different time period.
