Sure there are, but once you come up to fighting top notch players, every mistake they make should be used in your favour (and I think many people are overestimating BBs or are simply being lazy - it's tad easier to manage a monogenous chunk of ships than a combined arms fleet).

Well the fleet always travel at the speed of the slowest ship anyway (which is why I always save a recycler for fleetsaves ), so building some HFs to accompany my BBs seems a good idea.

Yep, that be the right way. Get your resource income up first and then worry about other stuff. I would say to build one single solitary small laser immediately so that noone can blind-raid you, but apart from that.
