It sucked I sent my colony ship to planet4 and then another player colonized it mid-flight so I had to recall, bah.
Since I couldn't find any other good planets nearby I've decided to just colonize planet 13 in my system (my home planet is 12). Planet 13, I'm feeling lucky!
I'm not much of a warmonger in these games so I'll probably be just a turtle/ duet*****. As in I trade duet to warmongers for other resources.
Here's my resource situation right now, I'm debating if it's worthwhile to push my metal mining to 10 which would entail upgrading solar to 11, or if I should start in on robotic factory 2 and R&D.

Not easy to judge from here, but it looks like you are close to launching a ship.
My guess is you should build a ship ASAP, you can upgrade with the loot you will get.
The metal and crystals for the upgrade would be better spend on ships.
dont forget to buy at least one computer tech, so you can run two (sets of) ships to two different locations at tthe same time.
I've been playing completely unoffensively the entire game, upgrading straight to lvl12ish buildings, and I'm #2 on the alliance power chart, I started earlier than most but anyway it shows there is some merit to an isolationist strategy.
Just sticking with upgrading buildings for a long time is the low-risk option, transports aren't that cheap and there is a risk you'll lose them. Meanwhile investment in buildings can never be taken away from you.
The question is: Do you want resource production like THIS to fall back on?!
edit: 2 notes. Firstly it's the same image I posted earlier and I have tweaked the fusion power plant down. Secondly the investment in metal storage was a newbie mistake stick with base storage and if you get too much excess metal throw up some missile launchers - but buildings do start to require A LOT of metal so by excess I mean 10,000+.
At some point you should research for Fusion Power Plant but it's not a huge priority maybe once your solar is lvl11ish.

You have done well
I have a few remarks to make though:
You can't loose ships on defenseless planets of inactive players
and
a cargo ship is cheaper then a Solar Satelite, which can easily be wiped out.

Jamski only just built a shipyard this evening. Yay missiles and solar sats.

Cargos and Solars are the same price pretty much, both 2000 kris.
In retrospect building the solars was probably a mistake, I'd have been better off saving the kris for investment in buildings, but for quite a while I was short on metal. Then the metal stockpile really started growing as I got into the kris heavy research like impulse drive.
