  • a free space colonisation game.

Its called Ogame, just found out about it and wondered if anyone has played this here? It looks very interesting

    Questions i have are:

Is it likely full of spyware?
Is it too good to be true(a free browser based Moo)?

I penciled it in for next week - i can play at work so if no-one else takes the plunge before then i'll update those.

      eh... I browsed the site...

      doesn't look very good...

it's one of those games where you just constantly upgrade stuff...

i.e. upgrade solar plant LEVEL 26

      upgrade planet mine LEVEL 187

there are graphics for the planets, but everything is pretty much just a spreadsheet....

      zzzzZZZZzzzzZZZZZzzzz

To us, it is the BEAST.

Jeez trying to find usefull play info on this game is hard

Still this site is handy: http://www.ogametips.com/

and as its first point i about being careful of phising attempts - i think this game needs to be approached with the right level of caution. remember you are playing a MMORPG in effect and who knows what kind of people(real) you may get approached by to form alliances etc. So be careful out there!

          Another note of caution:

a friend pointed me to this game and he has been giving himself forced de-tox from the game as it was taking over his real life(he was planning sleeping/eating around his game time! and being very effiecient about it). So i guess if this is the kind of game you may like, then be prepared to loose jobs/spouses over it, maybe

After those cautionary notes my initial impression has been of overload. There are many, many levels to this game it seems: espionage/conquest/diplomacy. its all there bar moving graphics. Still if you like those stat heavy football games, this may be a fun distraction.

I jumped straight into the game and made my first mistake, metals are of larger importance than i gave them, and in my rush to diversify my buildings, i didnt build enough Metal Factorys - so have a long wait for my metal rates to build up before i can do anything else. I've even had to turn of my crystal+deutrium mines so i dont use all my energy from my energy plant. So a right royal muck up. Still my planet looks nice(green) and is of a good size. I wont post many details about it/me, as in the Ogame universe you are competing with all the other players, and they will come and get you at some point. So for now(and for a good while longer judging by the pace of the game) i'll be keeping nice and silent and hideing low in the universe.

Seems ok, and potentialy addictive. remember in space no-one can hear you scream

Edit: (about an hour later) I got enough metal to build a level 3 metal mine - so not too long a wait. Its nice it keeps doing its thing even while your away(but could be bad when the evil aliens come to get you - just hope your home when that happens i guess? )

Ok day two of my space empire to be(at the momment we're just a planet based civilisation). And i now have enough resorces to build some more stuff

First up is to redress the imbalances i'd created at startup:

            1. Build more energy mines + go into the 'green' with my energy since i started the game(the world rejoices).

            2. Tune my off-line industries(due to previous energy shortfalls) and get Metal/Crystal and Deuterium mines all working at 60% capacity with a few green energy slots left.

Now to sit back and wait for more materials to pile up

No one has attacked me, and no phising has been attempted.

At this point of the game its quite a leisurely game, easy to hop in and out of(not much happening in other words, but thats cool sometimes - especialy at work ).

Heres a picture of my homeworld:

            Diameter: 12800 km ( 7 / 163 fields )
            Temperature approx: 24°C to 64 °C
            Climate: Jungle planet

I did not like the fact that you cannot just queue up stuff to build when you have the time/resources. Seems to be a waiting game. Kind of a turn off for me. I want to play and then log on the next day and do it again.

Dont think so, but i'll go google it to check.

And Spaced is right about the waiting thing. Still as i am at work and odd things need doing now and then, then its actualy a good thing - or it feels ok. Just sitting there tapping your fingers for the 10 real world mins to go by while you build energy plant level 5 isn't pulse racing gaming for sure. Still something came up i had to deal with, then when i got back it was finished.
This becomes less of a problem later on when you production/build rates become much more efficient(at least thats what i've been told). Still the game was designed in Germany - so i am expecting a certain level of hard-coreness

My planet is still there, my people undiscovered in their low tech innocence, quitely building their way into the heavens; safe for the time being.

hmmm, i signed up, it sent me the pasword email, minus the password, when i try to log on it says the player (me) doesn't exist, when i ask for my password to be re-sent it says it doesn't recognise my e-mail, despite the fact they've already sent me one

This happens to me often on most game sites i join. Usually its because i forget to change my spam settings in my mail, so i just have to sign up again. Still yours sounds a little stranger - maybe its an evil phisisng attempt like it mentions in that advice link i gave uptop.

hmmm maybe dont try your normal email passwords/bank account numbers etc to try to log on

i think my password was odd now i think about it, like not in the place in the email i expected it to be? anyway something else make sure you select the right 'universe' to sign into. Its not the most self explanatory game, the forums aren't hugely helpfull either.

So to log on you should have:

                      1.Universe(x)
                      2.playing name
                      3.Password

if not try again? (or poke your self in the eye with a sharp stick for equal measures of fun? )

check the link i gave near the top(ogametips something) - it saves getting lost in their forums(which are good as backup reference i find) and gets straight to some usefull points for new players, still i've mostly been playing by making mistakes

                          oh and its very slow

I've got to leave it unitll next week now - i'm growing quite fond of my beautiful green planet, hope its still there next monday(by which time i should have more than enough resources to build my first robot factory)
