I thought I was allowed to use it, since I was in the (Mage's) Guild.

in my experience yes. I tried just using my invisible power (I have the same sign as you it looks like) and stealing something, I always get caught. But if I do invisible, then sneak (which should nearly always work if you are invisible) the sneak will work (there's a little icon in the bottom corner of the screen that comes on when you are successfully sneaking. this icon is important, if it flashes off the split second before you steal something, you will get caught (assuming anyone is around to catch you- line of sight)

there are quicksaves. I use them all the time. F5 and F9 I believe. I pretty much set all my games for F5 and F9 if I can (many games allow you to configure hotkeys etc).

I also have autosave turned on before rest. This is very useful. I suggest you have autosave turned on before rest. This way if something happens when you are sleeping (if you have Tribunal installed) and something goes wrong, you won't have to go back far at all. Just try to rest again.

even if you belong to a guild, you still can't just go steal all their stuff. though there is a chest in the mages guild with equipment that is free for the taking. I think it's marked in the description of the chest somewhere.

I'm level 4, I think, in the Mage's Guild and level 2 in House Hlaalu, but I'm still level 1? Is killing people the only way to get exp?

Oh and re: the invisibility, I got the Hlaalu quest to steal the alchemist's formulas, and so I tried to do it the usual way - cast the invisibility, hold ctrl, and pick up the papers and take them, but for some reason she catches me. It seems that the invisibility is canceled when I pick up the papers.

you shouldn't be caught if the little icon is showing up when you press ctrl. It's an icon in the lower left corner that shows up when you are sneaking. It is possible heavy armour will make it more difficult to sneak. House Hlaalu is a good house, but more appropiate for theif type characters. Redoran is for more warrior type characters, and Telvanni for mage type characters. If you need to, you may have to find other methods of getting some gold, and then go to a trainer to train your sneak skill. That should ensure you sneak successfully.

and killing monsters doesn't give experience. In fact, there is no experience in this game. You might want to read the manual.

If you have gold, you can go up in levels without fighting a single creature (using trainers)

Hopefully you have your preferred armour type and your preferred weapon type (and magic type) in major skills. And if you really want to go up in levels fast put acrobatics and atheletics as a major skill. and then run around and jump around everywhere.

So if you have long blade as a major skill (and you are wielding a long blade), and heavy armour as a major skill (and you are actually wearing heavy armour), then go fight some monsters. you'll find you can go up levels fairly fast (at least the first 10 or 20 levels will be fast). Or if blunt weapons is your major skill get a mace or staff.

Your skills go up as you use them. And when your major/minor skills go up 10 points, you go up a level. Miscellaneous skills going up don't cause you to go up levels, but they will increase your attribute multiplier.

The attribute multiplier is complicated, I'm not sure I can explain it properly. But say you raise your long blade up 10 points and level up. When you level up you will get the option of placing 5 points to strength instead of just 1 (which is the lowest). 2 X multipliers are easy, since you only need to raise the skill once. You can also get 3 X multipliers.

they aren't real important. They just cause you to get all your attributes (strenght, willpower, intelligence etc) up to 100 faster.

It can be tough stealing things at lower levels when you have a low sneak skill.

I was part of the thieves guild and I had to steal this thing in Hla Oad. That involves opening a chest. Not something you can do while invisible. I just stole the stuff and ran (even with the guy attacking me). Luckily I didn't have to deal with that particular character the rest of the game. Though there is a spell called: Calm Humanoid which may have worked if I needed to talk to him for some other reason. But the method I just mentioned could be risky if done in front of plot important characters. You don't want to anger them (and definately don't want to kill them).

Here's a cheatish type way to easily improve sneak skill.

                      Spoiler:

Enchant a wearable item which gives constant effect invisibility. Then put it on and go into a building and stand behind someone. Then tape down the sneak key and go to the movies.

Then again, you could just spend a lot of money and go to the master trainer.

it's easier just to go to a trainer (and master trainer). Though finding out who the master trainer is could be a cheat. I just went and wrote down the whole list of master trainers.

and what role playing reason would you have to be sneaking behind the same guy for days on end (game time)?

Training is generally considered semi-cheating for most traits. Not that that stopped me from using them the previous time I played, but this time around I am going to attempt to level up completely without training. We'll see how that goes. It can be done with many of the skills, but things like enchanting...
