We changed it so that an update had to occur after a word guess too though IIRC (I know I suggested it, thought it went through).

Ljube is correct, and there is nothing in the rules against a word guess after the conditions are met and before the update, only that letter guesses may not be counted. Indeed, it says word guesses may be at any time.
