Civ 1 is the most notable one for me. I got it on a disc along with some other stuff when I bought a soundcard + speakers + a CD-ROM drive for the computer. Back then, they definitely didn't sell games here. Heck, back then I didn't have the slightest idea that a disc that is essentially a compilation of various software is illegal.

I've played many hundreds of games, but only bought a few of them. I'm in the incredibly luxurious position that our local library not only has books, but also an extensive games collection. The vast majority of all the games I've ever played I've gotten from there (in some cases over and over again). I also have several bachelor uncles who have huge game collections from which I can borrow as well

The games that I actually own myself are mostly the games covered on Apolyton: Civ1/2, CtP1/2, CtP2:AoM , MoO3, RoN, RoN:T&P, GalCiv (as well as several strategy guides). Of these, I only bought CtP1, RoN and (recently, actually) Civ2. The others (including all strategy guides) were gifts, either by friends/family or by the developers/publishers themselves. Good things come to those who mod

Aside from that I also bought Dungeon Keeper (that game rocks!), Star Trek 25th Anniversay and a few other ancient or obscure titles such as Airport Inc, Ceasar II, Gangsters, SimCity (the original) and probably one or two others. But I bought all of those as budget titles and didn't pay more than €5 for any of them.

Everything else I've ever played I haven't bought, but all still legal (by Dutch law anyway).

as I've said, there were probably hundreds of C64 games. Most were small games that you could fit several to a floppy disc (back when they were actually floppy 5 1/4"). Games like defender and other arcade games. But also many larger games such as winter games, summer games etc. and beachhead I and II. Archon, Archon 2. The only C64 games our family (actually only my brother) bought were like Bards Tale and Wasteland. But I never bought them myself, I played his copy.

For years I went without a computer, then I got a PC. My friend always went to this place where you can rent PC games and then install them on your computer. I'm ashamed that I never bought X-com. It's such a great game, they deserve my money. We had to write down all the codes that were in the manual on a piece of paper to start the game. And we rented Master of Magic as well. But after that I bought all my games (many that were bad such as Star Wars Rebellion and Nascar Racing).

but after I moved back to the same city my family came from I started getting games from my brother again. Games like Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn I have never bought!. I used his copy of the game. But I did get Throne of Bhaal as a birthday present- that is a legitimate copy.

And the way my thread question is worded it doesn't actually cover birithday presents. . oh well. Many of my games I do get for presents (because I ask for them specifically).

Also Axis and Allies: iron blitz is a burned copy of the expansion game) but I did buy the original. I never even play the expansion- I like the origianl rules. too bad the ai sucks.

of all the games currently on my hard drive: the only games that aren't legitimate copies are Baldur's Gate: shadows of amn (the expansion is legit), and colonization (got from the doggy site), and Iron Blitz.

I didn't buy Civ III, and I never will. I won't buy Civ IV either if they refuse to have a world map which places nations in their historical geographic positions.

Being forced to use a mod made editor to achieve what was a default setting in Civ II is such breathtaking neglect on the part of Firaxis, that I felt ethically obligated to boycott the game.

So I feel happy about the hole in my game collection that Civ III creates.

There are good reasons for boycotting Civ3.

That is not one of them.

I once lived in an apartment complex where people left old "stuff" in a trash room, where you could take stuff that was any good. I found a copy of Simearth there, with its box and manual. Not that i played it much.

In similar circumstances i found a copy of RELee:Civil War General. Which I played a few times.

I played AOK at a friend's, which inspired me to get AOE (and ultimately Civ)

My only experience playing a console was some game called Spiro Gyra or something, at one of POTM's friends houses. Didnt inspire me.

Spyro isn't the best example of console games. But generally PC is superior in most ways anyway IMO.

Did you also find Grim Fandango there too?

duke: You can't use the [q ] and the [quote ] tags like that, as you see. BTW; Grim Fandango is that game with the weird skeleton, right?

EDIT: I see you edited it to become right.
