  • What games haven't you bought, but have played?

a take on my other thread. I think you can figure it out by the title. I've played too many to list. But I don't consider myself a pirater. Many of those games were from my brother. I figure it's okay if you keep it in the family.

In fact, I play less pirated games today than I did back in the Commodore 64 years.

[Nerd mode]I think I'm a computer game fetischist...[/Nerd mode] All the games I have are legally bought...

I want the original Civ 2 with poster, manual and the whole enchilada... Sell it to tomorrow's brats 50 years from now on Ebay, I will...

I have Alpha Centauri (french original) and in english (bargain bin version)... I really don't like the budget versions... But what to do when the originals are off the shelves...

... and to relate to your other thread...

I haven't played either of the versions of SMAC yet... Tried a cousin's, though...

Ehm, the list will be endless. I guess I can be considered as a cheap pirater, but let's face it I wouldn't have played those games if I had not downloaded them somewhere, except for one online game that I play a lot. That game is worth its money. But most others... I mean I'm just a poor student,... I can hardly pay for one game as it is already, but that's because I spend a considerable amount of money on 'certain other things'

I occasionally do buy games btw, I'm not 100% evil

Oh, I've played a lot of games that I didn't end up buying, because I didn't like them. After all, I figure that's what they make the demo versions for.

            You forgot:
            - games owned by somebody else, like friends and family
            - games that are free (either free as beer or free as speech)
            - games that are abandoned, or appear that way
            - demos (usually crippled, though)

I didn't get Civ1 until rather recently, despite playing it a lot in my youth. I borrows it a lot. The first Railroad Tycoon was similiar. The games that we ended up getting were never the ones we wanted to play (and while I also never bought Doom, I didn't enjoy it that much, I did enjoy the two I mentioned above though a lot and I do'nt think my parents had any reason not to buy them for me (I was 10)).

Absolutely loads of my friend's PS, PS2, Xbox and GameCube games.

I haven't got the original boxed Civ2, but I've got a boxed copy of MGE with all of the kit.
The scenario building stuff in the manual is really interesting. Shame all of my units look rubbish.

I tend to play games just to see how they're like, to see what they bring. One could sometime wonder if I am more interesting in the history and mecanismsof videogames, than playing itself.

So I can easily install a game, play for a few hours, uninstall. Just renting the game is way enough, or very often a demo. The problem is: most cannot be rented This might change when everything gets "sold online". Contrarily to Carolus, I care only of what is on my hard drive (exceptions? Kind of... that'll be for another discussion).

Also, I consider that buying something from Microsoft is to steal. You steal from its competitors. Such a view means that if I install Windows, I might pay for it... to Linux. Also, I do not think that the price of things is always correct... a product which has no material cost or almost (plastic CD) would not take anythign from anyone if those not having the money for it would pay less.... for example since all this is an uneasy subject. There are also some other issues mixing up the issue, of all kinds.

When I'll make my own money, it'll be a whole lot easier since, my parents supporting me, I have no intention of using their money like that since I consider this a personal choice (which is a different issue with my OWN independent money). So I pay for things I never intended to use, and use things I never intended to pay.

This would, no doubt, be due to the immense list of those you've played and the time required to go through all of them to find the miniscule few that you haven't actually bought?

Most of mine are legitimate purchases, although a few of these, admittedly, were 'pre-played'.
Those that weren't bought were usually old-warez types that I wanted to try out, decided I didn't like and then trashed, or 'effectively' abandonware that I didn't have any real chance to pick up by legitimate means.
Basically I buy them if I like them and have the opportunity to do so.

I've tried out a lot of abandonware to see if I missed any good games in years gone by, although half the time I'm downloading a game I had on long since lost discs. I don't bother downloading new stuff because I have the money to buy any games I really want and web reviews quickly steer me away from games I shouldn't.

I played Civ2 once upon a time, but I didn't ever own it, Ient it from a friend who was tired of it( ), but it didn't work anymore, so I found it on the net. It was an legal offer apparently though, as the owner of the abadonware site claimed ot have got an agreement on hosting it legally for some days.

Lots of old games(read: abadonware) I never played or owned when they came out because I was a little child at the time they came out and I didn't have a computer anyway. As f.ex. Civ1(borned in 1986 I was way too young).

DL'ed R:TW and Need for Speed: Undersground 1(last one for my little brother) to check them out. Tried them both, but NFS:U was nothing for me and R:TW was only fun in the civvish part, the real time battles was nothing for me.

That was it I think, except the demos I've tried in my "long" life.

I played a "trial version" ( ) of Colonization, Civ2 and Settlers 2. Since I liked all 3 games, I bought them weeks later. I played Ultima VII "The Black Gate" as a copy from my brother, but some time later bought the Ultima VII collection set, which included Black Gate, Forge of Virtue, Serpent Isle and Silver Seed. Overall I can say, that I haven't played a pirated game (except the described "try-outs") for way more than 10 years.
