I played through SoU and half of HotU with such a fighter/dwarven defender, albeit only up to about level 25. This physical durability was amazing, but he couldn't stand a single chance against casters. This build is surely great, if you have a damage dealing and possibly healing party behind you. For SP however, it's not the very best thing to do, I learned that the hard way.

One standard item makes him into a god though - Cloak of Epic Spell Resistance.

Or any of the elemental resistance rings/armours - most spells are doing elemental damage.

Then you need a belt with Freedom.

And an item that gives immunity to Mind Spells really helps too.

Now you only need to look out for Death Magic and Issac's

What's an Isaac?

Isaac's missle storm and greater missile storm. Very potent mage spells. They don't have elemental damage, they have magic damage like a magic missile I believe. So they work on wide varieties of creatures/beings. I like to empower and maximize them too.

It's a nasty spell. My multiple deaths the other morning were caused by them. Bloody spellcasters.

The nasty part isn't the dmg but the save situation.

Yeah. IGMS offers NO SAVING THROW.

Of course, it's a VERY nice spell for spellcasters who don't want to put a lot of points into their primary stat, since the DC for the save is partially dependent on the modifier for that stat...

I have boogered up my potential greatsword weaponmaster though. Not enough intelligence from the off means I'm incredibly strong but not smart enouhg to pick up Intimidate points quick enough.

Down in the formian hive, you can get Boots of Grounding which have 10/- electrical and 5/- magical resists.

Well that's mean.

However, the point was, many spells have the capacity to do lots of dmg, but are easy(ier) to save against dmg, or take half dmg.

With the Isaacs casters you just have to invis and get in close (though IIRC the ones you mention have true sight) and whack 'em. A nice tanky character will do the job well, as, as discussed, someone is taking a whack of dmg and it may as well not be the squishy chars.

The main drawbacks with the Issac's spells are that the damage per bolt is very low and easily resisted, and that the bolts divide themselves equally over all targets. Since in Folderol you can have practically unlimited henchmen (depending on your CHA and your wallet) there's no need to take all those bolts yourself. Or summon something with a few HP, or get a familiar. Or another human!
