          Dissident:

Yes, I meant east of Nevada. Gambling is illegal in Arkansas outside of two horse tracks, but I don't think we need to lower our moral standards to make money.

Although on the other hand, Arkansas side of the MS river withers away and impoverishes while Mississippi side is booming with new casinos popping up every other day...honestly, I could really see Hot Springs become a gambling mecca (at least for our state) if we legalized it. At least on the level of Shreveport.

But gambling profits off others' losses and most Arkansans don't want to see their state do that.

Camden, NJ. Chester, PA. Brownsville, PA. Atlantic City, NJ (then gambling was legalized there). Detroit, MI. Pittsburgh, PA. Philadelphia, PA. Baltimore, MD. Newark, NJ. New York, NY.

These cities have gone through tremendous economic, population, criminal, and social hurts in recent years (70s-early 80s).

The first three on my list there are still horribly depressed with little hope for any real recovery.

All cities go through boom and bust.

PA has it in the works to legalize slot machines. All in the name of helping senior citizens by lowering their property taxes.

I can give you the best gaurantee money can buy that gambling revenue would not cut any taxes here--we need as much money as we can get, and since the state Constitution forbids running a deficit, the Legislature had to pass a 1 cent sales tax increase last year.

The money would likely all go to educational building renovation and replacement--a state study said we needed billions to repair our schools. Some of the items were just plain silly (like air conditioners for a school barn) but outside of larger better-maintained (aka city) districts it really is as bad as it sounds.

Oh, and Dissident, I have good news--I heard on the radio that for the 2004 year we gained 600 new jobs in Ouachita County (although presumably population still somehow managed to decline.) Then the news announcer dampened my spirits with the reminder that that was the largest increase since 1978. But we can hope. Maybe when (if) the state gets that new huge auto plant they can put it here (good bucking luck).

I agree, not all cities grow, indeed, many shrink. Camden, NJ in particular is shrinking at a rate that in a few years it will no longer be a city.

It probably won't here either. It's just the tactic they're using to gain public favor.

Why does a barn need air-conditioning?

Good for Ouachita County. What kind of jobs are they? I hate it when politicians and others say things like, "Look, hundreds of new jobs!!! in the restaruant industry" That's what cities up here are becoming, places to go eat.

I'd also like, for a change, to buy a game that didn't require patching

And if on console - this is especialy important.

Even consoles seem to be heading towards the "test after release" strategy due to the ability to patch games such as on the Xbox.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Kind of sucks for those that rent these things occasionally.

Yes, beta testers that pay you must seem like a good idea to most companies.
