If I ally, I keep my agreement. That way if I need an alliance later, I can still get people's trust. Taking the short-term view will cause more problems in the long-term. I know I will think twice before allying with people who have broken pacts before.

What I'm saying is that you broke an agreement. you'll have trouble finding partners that are willing to honor an agreements that you have proposed.
I know that there will only be one, but I will still honor my agreements. That is the delta. We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

I am not saying that I usually betray people - this is the first time i've actively betrayed anyone, and probably the last for a while yet. But, there are some situations where it's ... necessary, and I don't think very many of the rest of you will complain that the four of us took out Spaced's huge fleet of lasers, by far the biggest danger in this game (at the time).
I believe I earn "trust" by showing that the situation i'm suggesting (alliance, say) is in the best interest of both myself and my proposed ally. Skanky, if I suggested attacking someone with you, and you couldn't see any great benefit to it for me, would you ally with me? I doubt it. I hope not, anyway ... On the other hand, if you suggest an alliance to me, and you don't have any clear reason for doing so, I'm certainly not going to agree to it. But, if I suggest attacking someone that benefits you AND me, more than the betrayal of one or the other of us would benefit either of us, I would presume you'd accept.
There are many situations where this is the case, and that's where alliances come from in this game. I suggest to X, "Let's go attack Z, we'll each get 6 bases and we'll lose nothing." X has a large fleet, as do I, and Z has a similar sized fleet. X and I have 8 bases each, and Z has 12. That's a clear win-win, for 6 bases, and so X agrees.
OTOH, if I suggest the same thing, but Z has a fleet half the size of mine, and 12 bases, compared to X having a fleet twice the size of mine, and 16 bases. Would you ever accept that deal, as X? You'd be loony to - it's just asking for betrayal. And if I were X, i'd laugh at a suggestion like that, and then go attack on my own, or perhaps shield, *just in case*.

I'm assuming that "awesome update" means there is at least one "fair fight" - or at least a fight that goes over the full 6 rounds

Chapter 13.2
Exit Strategy
Here is something to think about
Run.
-Strategy no. 36 of 36, Sun Tzu's Art of War
With war comes change, and now the winds of change were blowing against the old monarchial establishment.
While Siffan Industries' roller-coaster tech boom and busts had attracted headlines, Mr. Y's industrial empire had quietly amassed the largest fleet in the galaxy. Now, a small but still sizeable part of it was put to use.
But first, a spy operation. Under the cover of a space-typewriter-monkey dealer, an agent of Mr. Y infiltrated the headquarters of the Ventis Society.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"What? We've been spied?"
"I'm afraid so, Zol. Though it's not that bad, the only thing affected was our spy training program. It's not as if you ordered an attack anyway."
"That's what I'm concerned about- spies only play spy versus spy pranks with each other in old 20th century magazines- I sense an invasion coming."
"Well, looking at the fleet tactics manual, I don't think we should be worried too much about that. By the way, that was probably the shortest tactics manual since the days when people fought with rocks."
--------------------------------------------------
Zol's fleet was already at full power when Mr. Y's titans dropped in. Wasting no time, Zol ordered his crews to turn over the one-page tactics manual.
On the back was a single word: DISENGAGE.
