Weren't there massive problems with Halo2 MP upon release? Does that show a similar attitude to polish? Or do you have some spurious distinction between the two you are just about to draw?

There weren't any massive problems of Halo2 MP upon release I was aware of.

And Halo2 sold way, way more copies in the intial 24hrs than HL2...it set an all-time video game record, too.

Well I didn't play it so I wont argue. I am sure there was mass whining about something........was it map selection being bugged or something similar?

No. And the standby bug wasn't discovered until later.

That stuff wasn't/isn't a bug. It is intentially HORRIBLE game design. You can't choose what map/gametype you want to play if you want to play with random people online. THAT SUCKS. It's still that way BTW.

I knew there was something. That sounds uberlame.

It rocks. It's far better than the standard choose-a-game lobby for other online MP games.

Although I initially hated the way Bungie had set up Halo 2's multiplayer, I have now come to prefer it.

Scenario 1: Halo 2 on Xbox Live

I want to play a 4v4 team game. I pick Team Skirmish in matchmaking, wait approximately 30-45 seconds, and am soon playing a game of 4 on 4 Capture the Flag.

Scenario I: Ghost Recon 2/DOOM3/etc/any PC game I ever played

I want to play a team game. I select the appropriate option, and wait while a server list is brought up. I get to scroll through the list and find a host who is playing the map/game type I like; however, I must try to find one that hasn't started yet, and since the list almost instantly becomes outdated, this can prove troublesome. Sometimes when I do manage to get in a game, it is one in which the host is planning on leaving. In many instances, I have to start all over, which means I could have to wait up to 10 minutes before I get into a game I want.

I think not being able to know the exact map or gametype beforehand is a small trade off for being guaranteed a game which will start with minimal delay (not having to wait for a game to end before I can join, or having to deal with joining a server where the host or players are about to leave).

But they could do exactly the same system and allow you to choose maps if they wanted. You could simply have a player created list of preferred maps and gametypes as part of your profile that the system could use to create games, rather than preset playlists. Wait time would be maybe 10% more, and the system would no longer suck.

You could even have the option to jump in blind to reduce time if you wanted. That would make way more sense.
