Actually, only the second method allowed the setter any leeway- the first operated on a 1 extra guess for each less letter principle, ie 5 letters = 10 guesses, 7 letters = 8 guesses etc.Originally posted by DrSpike
Well the game has evolved so that the setter also wants to win. Adjusting the guesses like you suggest first is therefore not attractive.
Similarly we can't really allow the guesser to specify the number of guesses.
The differential number of total guesses for longer words might allow more variety though.
And I was thinking of having a small range, basically to allow the setters to show off by allowing more guesses
