I also think that it would be better as the single player 4x it was; maybe there could be a good multiplayer via multiplayer system battles, aka RTW: Allocate a certain amount of points to ships and things on the ships, then see who's left standing. It seems possible that the MMO deal could work, but it doesn't feel like Ascendancy to me.

I run XP and I'm able to run it with no problems, but I don't know much about computers so I can't say why.

As far as the combat sounds, I seem to remember in the old days of the TLF forum someone managed to extract them and rip them into some other format. I'll poke around and see if I can dig up any info on that.

Well cyclotron7 - your post has made me reinstall and play Ascendancy. Great fun, and it runs perfectly - even under XP.

To those having problems, getting it to run: It is probably sound-related. Try selecting the first soundcard on the list, if you have a soundblaster compatible soundcard (and who doesn't these days).

The sound was fine, but the mouse is so sticky, it is painful and when I exit the screen get a wierd picture and I have to reboot.

I tried Moslo, but it did not help. It is hardware and probably Bio related as I had it working on my previous XP PRO box.

I too experienced sound problems, but they were all back in the day when I first played Ascendancy; ironically, my recent re-installation on XP went without a hitch.

The mouse sticky thing is pretty annoying, but because it runs in DOS I don't know what to do about it. Any ideas, or is mouse speed a set thing in DOS programs?

You could try to disable Directdraw while running the game. This works for some games. I have not tried it as I have bigger issue, lock ups.

This can be done via DXDIAG.

Personally, I'd rather have it rushed and have the beta released as the final product than never get it at all.

Sorry to be so comp-illiterate, but I'm not quite familiar with those things. Where can I find this stuff on my computer?

Go to the Start menu and select Run.

Clear any entry and type in DXDIAG, this will execute that app and you will get screen with a number of tabs. Select Dispaly.

You will see a section with lots of info and the second one has three things listed. They should be enabled and have a disable button. Try to disable them one at a time and see if that helps.

If not you can invoke the tool and enable them.

Thanks, I'll try that when I'm back at my home computer.

What kind of mouse are you running? Some mice, I've noticed, won't work or don't work well with Acsendancy. For bad mice or no sound, learn DosBox (URL: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1 ) and use it. You'll need to start DosBox, master the "mount" command, and then you can play Acsendancy with full sound and even with mice that would otherwise crash it. DosBox also works well on other old Dos games.

Huh, thanks! I'll check that out; for me the sound works fine, but the mouse would be nice to fix. Right now I'm away from my usual computer, so I can't try that out, but I'll give it a shot when I can. It's a good thing, too, because playing was starting to make my arm tired.

We Ascendancy aficionados should have some kind of ship design competition, or battle, or something. I could take ya.

At least until I get more word on Seeker. Signed up for the beta, waiting for a response.
