If you want a story Longest Journey still holds the DrSpike best script in game award.

The Gabriel Knight series is also excellent in this regard, though slightly more dated than LJ.

Many of the early adventure game classics (lots of LucasArts games in particular) were about laughs and puzzles.

LJ sounds great, but how "longest" is it? I'm not sure if I have 100 hours to pour into a single game - although if it's really that good...

You can't beat the Infocom adventures, even though they are text based. Try Zork, Planetfall, The Leather Goddess of Phobos, and a number of others. I think you can find them free on the Web.

Look for the triology pack - that will give you a never ending amount of hrs you could sink into this game.

Hmm, this looks really good, too bad the only way to get it is from eBay

Your machine is just about good enough to run the first couple of Thief games.

I mean, I don't know what you mean by adventure, but the Thief games do have a good story, and have limited violence. But they're played from a first-person perspective, so that might put you off, although they're anything but conventional FPS games.

It's not that long, 20-25 hours IIRC.

Here's a review of the game:

A pity I was never able to finish it as it kept crashing my machine at the time.

The broken sword series is pretty good too. Top of the class is Monkey Island though.

You can find the first two on some abandonware sights (not underdogs)

The first Broken Sword was great, very atmospheric and great humour. The second one was so-so, haven't played the third one.

Try King's Quest II+ VGA at http://www.agdinteractive.com/. It's free, and it's very very good. I think it's just the sort of thing you're looking for; while the rewrite of the game and the actual remake of it were made recently, it's in the vein of the older Sierra games.

I suppose you could try King's Quest I VGA too while you're there, but I found it boring, frankly. Little in the way of story or characters. I'm glad they completely redid the second one when VGAizing it, as it sounds like the original KQ2 was similiarly boring.

Another good adventure, this one made in a more modern 3D style, is Grim Fandango. I'm not sure if that one will run on your system, but I think it might; it's not anything high-end, especially by today's standards. Amazon was selling it for $10 last I looked.

Beneath a Steel Sky is a good, classic adventure game. Haven't tried Flight of the Amazon Queen yet.

And you need the virtual machine because there is no executable in the free version. I was quite happy to see that, myself. Old DOS games can be a pain to get working 100%.

Oh, I remember one now. It's called The Superheroes of Hoboken, which is a mix of adventure and RPG. Very funny game.

I am open to your recommendations.

                              The game should be

                              1. Not a Myst clone. Ive played Myst, and not keenly interested in another. It should focus more on story than on puzzles.

                              2. Not excessively violent. Baldurs Gate level of blood and gore is fine.

                              3. Must play on an ancient PC = P2, 266 Mhz, 48 Meg Ram. Dont laugh. and dont threadjack to my prolonged PC search.

                              4. I will probably look in the bargain bins, so id be happy to see LOTS of titles suggested, as it isnt necessarily easy to find any one title.
                              Zelda!

Syberia is awful. It's virtually impossible to play.
