  • recommend me an adventure game

In my quest to explore the many aspects of gaming, im about ready to dabble in adventure games.

I am open to your recommendations.

    The game should be

    1. Not a Myst clone. Ive played Myst, and not keenly interested in another. It should focus more on story than on puzzles.

    2. Not excessively violent. Baldurs Gate level of blood and gore is fine.

    3. Must play on an ancient PC = P2, 266 Mhz, 48 Meg Ram. Dont laugh. and dont threadjack to my prolonged PC search.

    4. I will probably look in the bargain bins, so id be happy to see LOTS of titles suggested, as it isnt necessarily easy to find any one title.

If you prefer to have it here:

The Longest Journey is the best adventure game ever (sequel soon to be released)

Not sure what system it needs though... it played fine on my p3 500, don't remember how much memory I had while playing that game though
This space is empty... or is it?

Realms of Arkania - features: turnbased combat, party based rpg style adventuring in a HUGE game world, excellent character generation, lots of depth, collect herbs for your herbalist to heal the party, hunters get food while you go adventuring etc etc.

Look for the triology pack - that will give you a never ending amount of hrs you could sink into this game.

Ill keep an eye out for it, though i was particularly looking for an adventure game, not an RPG.

well its like baldurs gate, but with more primitive graphics and a larger game world and will run on your system.

hmmm i suppose you have tried all the Monkey Island games?

If so then Legends of Kyrandia was a nice traditional adventure game, and a classic to boot with very high production standards - it became a trilogy too.

Longest Journey will just about play on your system.

Other classics you might want to check out with an older system include the Monkey Island series and Gabriel Knight series.

Nope, havent tried Monkey Island. Only adventure games ive got are Myst, Collosal Cave, and the first text based Zork. While the text adventures are cool in their own way, and have nostalgia associated with them (about the last contact I had with the gaming world before I bought SimCity in 1998 was a grad school pal who wrote hint books professionally for Infocom text adventures, back in circa 1983) thats not what im
                looking for now.

Ok, so Longest Journey, Gabriel Knight, and Monkey Island are recommended.

I see Crystal Key alot in the bargain bins - is that more Myst like?

Try Flight of the Amazon Queen and Beneath a Steel Sky. You can find both on the downloads page at http://www.scummvm.org/ .

I got the idea crystal key was indeed myst like, but I can't say i've played it myself, just considered it.

Baldur's Gate is generally considered to be an RPG - do you want an adventure-oriented RPG (ie less morrowind-style more diablo-style RPG) or *just* an adventure game (where the stats are more or less fixed, ie)?

MSoft's Dungeons Siege and DS: LoA are pretty decent adventure games; not much RP, mostly just adventuring through the world. Technically requires 128mb ram/333, not sure if you can pull it off with 48mb ram/266 or not...

                    demo for it here
<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

are these legit public domain games, and why do i need a virtual machine to run them?

Im looking for more like a classic adventure - telling a story, no management of stats, experience points and levels. NOthing wrong with that - i enjoyed BG and PST - but i think it takes a different kind of story to make that stuff work. Im looking to see how a PC game tells a story in a different fashion.

My impression is Dungeon Siege is on the violent side for me - dont they call that an action/adventure (as Diablo is an action/RPG?) Anyway, I dont think it would run.

They're quite legit although I'm pretty sure they're still copyrighted by their authors, which makes them freeware but not public domain. You need a virtual machine to run them because a virtual machine is what they were written for.

Syberia is a pretty good adventure game and I think Syberia 2 is out now. Great graphics, good story and good puzzles - less of the usual nonsensical puzzles that involve picking things up and combining them in outlandish ways.

I enjoyed Ripley's Believe It of Not: The Riddle of Master Lu. Some puzzles are quite hard, though. So if you can find it, try it out.

Set in the mid-1930's, this game is based on the real life adventures of Robert L. Ripley, who in my opinion, is as close to a real life Indiana Jones around. Ripley gave the world the renowned Ripley's Believe It or Not cartoons that have been popular in daily newspapers for over 60 years. These cartoons featured little known or odd facts that appeared to be too odd or unusual to be true. But they were, BELIEVE IT OR NOT. The collecting of these items earned Ripley the title the "modern day Marco Polo" and he took great pride in never having one of his facts disproved. Throughout the game, the player has a chance to see some original cartoons, as well as items that Mr. Ripley collected throughout his life.

This game is not an attempt to recreate history, but to have fun with it. Ripley is set up as a struggling museum owner (Ripley's Odditorium), and is looking for more exhibits to draw crowds so he can pay the bills. With his assistants Mei Chen and Leng Li, he tries to unravel the Riddle of Master Lu. I won't go into great detail here for risk of giving the game away, but it involves a lot of travel to exotic locations and several puzzles to unravel. Oh, yes, there is the usual cast of villains, henchmen, thugs and troublemakers along the way that make this an enjoyable game to play.
Here's a review of the game:
