Silly, tho? No, not at all.
It's just slightly less luck dependent than Risk. Like you had the Constable of the Tower of London, and you were going to grab Henry during your move. Unfortunately, just before your turn, plague struck London and killed off Henry.

Yeah, I forgot about things like that, it's been so long. Still I recall in college getting three or four people together to play--loads of good backstabbing going on.

Historical accuracy trumping game balance?

Being so random, it's great as a social game. Somebody invented Drink Maker, e.g. chug when a royal is killed. I think that's amusing.

Purely as a game i always found Kingmaker a bit suspect. Too many random events which affect the game in a big way, combat was weak and i remember we evolved lots of house rules to get around various flaws.
Where it really shines though is as a multiplayer experience. Get the right bunch of sociopaths, liars and people of generally dubious morality and it's great. The player interaction overcoming the shortfalls. Get the wrong group of people (and i often have) and it's tedious.
In the same category i'd add Dune (Avalon Hill), Warrior Knights (Games Workshop), Down with the King (AH) and Diplomacy.
If your opponents have no social skills or sense of fun then i stick to Third Reich and it's equivalents.
Down with the King is more fun than Kingmaker. However I lost my copy a long time ago and haven't been able to find another copy.

I used to have all the Squad Leader stuff. Actually just like the first 6 expansions. I never had time to really play the game though because I had my hands full with Star Fleet Battles.

i had the original squad leader and the next two expansion... i gave up playing it as it was becoming too tedious and involved , i prefer the grand strategy game

Better than kingmaker was JUNTA. Talk about a great game for a drunk fest.
