Ah Gettysburg, got that too. Two of my favorites back then were Crete and ... Alesia.

AH Kingmaker, a voice from the past. A good game.
Having a twin brother made it easy to play the old board games. We used to have most of the old Avalon Hill games. Most of the historical games got old quick since they were historical games and sometimes a bit one sided. Like Gettysburg. As the south you had to get lucky on a quick attack and blocking northern reinforcements for any chance to win, so the game was usually decided in the first few turns and there wasn't much variety.

Tactics II, Blitzkrieg, Jutland, Midway were some of our favorites. But we played a lot of different ones.

I have some others but can't remember. I grew up the only person I knew who played these games. All my friends were much into sports or other activities to want to play complex games like these with me. $%^& they even thought that Risk was way too complicated!
That was the problem with board war games. Most were pretty bad for solitaire, and hard to find folks who would play. I convinced a neighbor kid to play Afrika Corps, but he was no enthusiast. I played in a high school war games club, but after school time was limited, and you couldnt leave the games around. The other problem with board war games, you cant just "hit save". Of course the ease of scanning the map, and the ability to implement house rules were advantages.

In grad school somebody had Kingmaker. Really one of the coolest games - went way beyond your typical wargame, to incorporate all kinds of feudal politics. And it looked really kewl.

Before my Dad headed over to Saudi Arabia in 2000, he dropped off several boxes containing the games and magazines at my house.

Reading Strategy and Tactics was great. You could learn history, military strategies, diplomacy for every era. It was cool how they covered topics that were relevant to the game supplied with the magazine.

Do you have any of the old games or magazines?

Yeah I remember I used to want to get my hands on Kingmaker. I don't call the title of this magazine but it would have articles on tips, tactics, and so on for games, and they would have terrific articles on Kingmaker from time to time.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Startroops board game, that was a lot of fun. Especially being able to attack with minature nuclear warheads and battling it out in those Bugs' tunnels.

There was this game I believe it's called Eternal Empire or something, it was very similar to that PC game Star Wars: Rebellion. You had characters which could lead units or perform missions and at same time you had to deal with micromanagement of different planets. There were also random events which made the game a lot of fun. It doesn't seem to have became popular although - one of those hidden gems I guess.

EDIT: Startroopers not Startroops. You know, Robert Heinlein's novel...

well id have to think which of the SPI games I still own came from S&T. I have Sinai, and that DIDNT come from the mag. Red Star/White Star also didnt (though I dont think i have that any more). Im pretty sure I have Oil War, and that DID come from S&T. I think I have 6th Fleet, and not sure where that came from.

I dont think I have any of the mags.

If youre interested in the history, military strat, etc you should know that Jim Dunnigan runs a web site called strategypage. It mainly covers contemporary matters, and is somewhat on the hawkish side, so be forewarned.

Kingmaker is a silly game, best played while you're high, or at least drunk.

This is a bit OT, but I got Settlers of Catan for Christmas from my brother "in law" (we're not married!).
It's really good, and I was wondering if anyone else at 'poly had played it/heard of it.

I don't know anything about Settlers of Catan, but I have run across an old thread about it in the "Classic Games (Civilization/Boardgame, Colonization, MoM)" forum.

That's usually how I played it.
Silly, tho? No, not at all.
