Moraffware rings a bell ....but I still wouldn't know
[]Angband[/b]?
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.
Not angbad (never heard of that...)... keep guessing.
Clue 9: Play a Warrior, Mage, or (I think) Thief.. It's a Dungeon Crawl- easy rip off of D&D. 1991 release. Avaliable on MANY free-shareware software CDs.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it not being angband (due to the fact that Steve isn't the name of any of the major designers of Angband) a long while ago
Angband, for the uninitiated, is one of the most popular Roguelike games, ASCII graphics based (although there are many graphical mods for it) dungeon crawlers. Angband specifically is based on UMoria, which is a Tolkien-based game. UMoria came out in '83 for Unix (and subsequently for others including DOS). Angband came out in '91 or so, a few years after Moria was no longer maintained actively I believe, as a significant rewrite. Several shops were added or substantially modified; more classes of monsters added; more variation in many of the monsters; more classes of adventurer, as well as more races; several advanced settings (such as Autoroller, the greatest cheat ever!); and many other minor upgrades. Also, the game's ending changed; rather than a semirandom event (finding the Balrog at a very low level, as in Moria), it's a 'fixed' event happenning at level 99 and then level 100.
Angband has spawned dozens of remakes, from ZAngband (ZelaznyAngband) to a Pern remake, several tolkien-based remakes modifying things the creators thought were interesting, and some total overhauls. Go to http://www.thangorodrim.net for more info.

Okay, well to move things along, it's : Moraff's World.
An AMAZING game!
Second and best in Steve Moraff’s quirky RPG series, Moraff’s World expands the kill-monsters-get-treasure premise of Moraff’s Revenge by adding more sophisticated gameplay features, and many times larger gameworld. Description as MobyGames says it all: “There are many dungeons and continents to explore in this classic. All the dungeons are randomly generated, though once the game is played for the first time the dungeons stay the same afterwords. There are over 40 different monsters with different attributes and weak points and 200 levels of each dungeon to play. The dungeons are explored in first person view, and you can travel over the surface of the earth in top down view as an X. (the effect used to display varying heights of terrain is interesting) There are also many items to collect, from holy hand grenades to your standard set of plate mail armor.”
With a larger scope than Moraff’s Revenge and better user interface than Dungeons of The Unforgiven, Moraff’s World is the best RPG in this cult classic series. Recommended for any fan of Roguelike games who is looking for a “light” dungeon crawl with a cool sense of humor. Oh, and if you never find the holy hand grenade in the game, you ain’t seen nothing yet [EG]. Thumbs up!
Note: Although it doesn't say so on Moraffware's official website, all of the old Moraffware shareware games are still sold. Contact their sales dept. at the e-mail provided below for details.

Wouldn't have gotten that. And I don't recall reading a review about it in the days. It's the kind of game you need to have played yourself to know about.
