The only sound that annoys me in the game, is the sound from the mines...
This space is empty... or is it?

Windows XP and running old games

Have you tried the 'Win98/DOS emulation mode' or something like that i think? Thats about as far as my XP knowledge goes i'm afraid!
If that doesnt work you may be forced to play the later Settlers games instead

You could also try Microsoft Virtual PC, where you just install Win98SE and run it from there. With that you can run Win98SE from WinXP (no need to reboot)

Im trying the game now (having gotting just a little bored with MoO2 - not disappointed though)

I got the game (used) with no manual. There seems to be some kind of zipped up manual, but the readme told me to install some utility. I'm gonna see if that works, cause the ingame help is not very good - at least not at this point. I may ask questions here. So far i find the interface confusing.

Post your questions and we might be able to help. It's been a while but I played this for ages.

                    Thanks.

                    But before gameplay, tech problems.

At first there was no sound on the intro movie, but i clicked and the movie closed and I could play.

Now there IS sound on the intro movie (which has saved me some questions about the plot) but when the movie ends, or I end it by hitting escape, and the DOS routine starts, it hits a fatal dos error and crashes. So much for Settlers 2 tonite. If more info is needed, I will try to record the exact message.

On my p166 - everything is fine(i had to detect the soundcard, but that was ok as it was on the list).

On my P3 533(onboard graphics and sound) - everything is not alright, and i lost patience as it was fine on my number1 game playing pc

The only problem I have with the game is there is no sound IIRC (it's been about 6 months since I last played it), but that's not really a problem I'd say, since I always leave Winamp running in the background

To just get the game running, you only need WinMe/98SE/98/95... it doesn't matter if you have top-of-the-line computer or not...

I had no sound on my better system, and the display was all corrupted - it made it unplayable

But i got my fav system and on that everything works as it should

LoM - i'll have a go again at trying to get it to work on my more powerfull system, and i'll report back with anything useful i find

Im running it on an old system (P2 266) and Im running Win98. It RAN before, when the sound was screwed up. Im thinking i need to reinstall and NOT set up the sound.

Whats odd is that the sound card is NOT on the list - Yet the sound WORKS for the intro movie -could that cause the whole game to crash?

Hehe, as I'm fond of pointing out to those who view old games generally with overly rose-tinted glasses, sometimes they were a royal pain in the ass.
