Hehe, a lot of developments tend to get made within the FPS genre. People like Carmack deserve their credit.

Ok, for all you guys saying - the dudes who designed game x, or founded company y - the point of this thread is to honor PEOPLE, not games or companies. You want them to be famous, youve got to NAME them. If you dont know their names, go find the names, please. "X deserves fame for designing Y, but I cant be bothered to find out what X's name is" Sheesh!

Surprised no ones mentioned Chris Avellone (sp?) for Planescape Torment.

Another thing about Sid - his role as a mentor. In addition to all the games hes developed, he had a role in Brian Reynolds career (despite the bad feeling, i think that role was positive) and thus really does deserve some credit for SMAC, and also for RON, and Bruce Shelley emerged from his tutelage, and went on , as said above, to AOE, and AOM. Is this just coincidence? Are there other game designers with "alumni" with such distinguished track records?

and Feargus for the now defunct black isle studios.

                      I'll look up the names

                      Feargus Urquhart

                      Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk

and of course sid and brian- but that's a given.

How about 'em fellas at Looking Glass Studios? Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Thief... I also think one (or some) of them were behind Deus Ex?

I only have the latter two, but I've heard great things of System Shock (I and II), and that these people are living legends. Hearsay?
