  • Give vovan game ideas!

Alright, so the fall semester is drawing to a close at the university. So it is time ... to plan for the spring semester!

Basically, the situation is this. I will be taking an advanced software engineering class next semester, and I have reason to suspect that the assignment will be to write a game. Further, I have reason to suspect that my team will be leaning towards C# for coding it. Now, C# is a fairly new language to me. I have coded a few programs in it before, but nothing related to media, nothing as heavily media-oriented as a game, that's for sure. So, what I would like to do over the month-long break is to code up a simple game for practice, so that when it comes to the real thing, I don't have to spend time trying to figure out how to draw something to screen.

Now, of course, the game needs to be pretty small if it is to have any chance of completion in the four-week period, because I definitely won't be spending that much time on it. On the other hand, I want it to be at least challenging and interesting. I was thinking originally about another tetris or pacman clone or something like that, but that is all quite boring. If I were to do something like that, it'd mostly be transcribing the code of my old projects into this new programming language, which is not what I'm after here.

Then I was thinking about something like rewriting Colonization, or the original SimCity, or making a small RPG, but that stuff seems a little too large for four weeks of relaxed coding.

So, now at this point I am out of ideas. So if you have a nice but fairly simple game idea, feel free to toss it my way, and it might just get implemented.

      Code a simple MUD.

      Or Connect 4 with AI.

MUD. MUD is good, although I've already done one of those. It's basically a MUD written in Java with heavy scripting support through Python, so it is highly extensible. It was a good learning experience, but I don't really want to do it again.

Connect-4 has a similar story. We had to code generic Gomoku AI in lisp for my Intelligent Systems class, so same story as MUD: been there done that.

        Thanks for the ideas though.

          A Galaga-type game? Maybe semi-3D, like Starfox-esque?

How about a Galactic Overlord GM'ing program?

Well, like I said above, my prime objective is getting familiar with C# APIs mostly for graphics. In that sense, doing a GMing program is kinda useless, because there isn't a whole lot of graphics involved there. Galactic Overlord especially, doesn't even seem to have a map. Because of that, if I had to pick a forum game to automate, I'd choose Society, I guess.

That would be a good choice, yes. Trouble is, I actually wrote such a game in C++ - it was even featured in the Student Showcase of the Independent Games Festival last year. So I've had enough of that stuff for now. On a similar note, I should probably further explore the world of arcades. Problem is, like I said, things like pacman and other classics have been beat to death by now, and sure enough, I've already tried my hand at most of them.

Have you had a look at the CTP2 source code(its in C++ though) or maybe thought of giving the Candle'bre team a shout to help out a little.
Its not exactly the complete act of making a game, but either projects could prove useful to you?

Failing that i'd quite like to see a slightly better version of Sid's origonal Pirates

Mmmm.... Boulder Dash is somethind I haven't tried my hand at yet. And it's just the right size to be finishable in the short time I have.

Spike, what be Ghosts and Goblins?

child of Thor, like I said, I am trying to get familiar with how to do graphics in C#, and as far as helping out an existing project is concerned, I am currently busy with the Clash of Civilizations team.
