He means using unskilled soldiers to throw grenades somewhere near aliens, rather than skilled soldiers to throw grenades on the exact square the aliens are in before they have even seen you. I guess it has some merits.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Actually I mean using skilled players who have developed their skills from killing aliens not shooting floors.

          Well!
With the Combomod or the Tough Alien mod together, get your squaddie to use the knife!
          Perhaps, the new stunweapon!
          But watch those blue chompers!

Try the TNT or the C4 instead of grenades!

          Happy Halloween, there!
Waiting for Freddie, or Norman Bates, or Scream II maybe, perhaps!

The game is not XCOM. It had to be different, since licenses were not renewed. XCOM died, and these people took over, but had to start over from the beginning. It has spirit, but the entire idea is that Aliens came to Earth, and released biospores that clouded up the skys, and killed just about everything on Earth.
Only some humans survived it all, and that is where you start. A couple of bases, underground, and almost noone to fight the Aliens. Only a 7 limit crew of squaddies, and only 15 total throughout the game.
Then some players thought it was too easy, except for some missions, where the main Aliens were in it, but those were way harder, so, usually the player had to reload, reload, reload the saved game to get pass that point. Then a while into the game, Planters UFO came in and planted a biomass, that is spreading across the Earth. That biomass takes back won Bases (that can be either - military, engineering, or research) and starts covering the entire Earth. There is some research, that the player can do, and another Base researched that is an Antibiomass Base, but that is another part of the game.

Some complained about the voices and anything else, but after playing it awhile, it has some humor with those voices, and some squaddies that may come in, always can be used, instead of some of the other ones.

So, no, XCOM it is not, coud not be, so had to be different. But to me, it is fun, and the more that anyone plays it, the more anyone gets use to it, and it is not all that bad, but different.

Probably not as hard as XCOM, but more Aliens to fight on Hard Level, and has nice music to the game.

So now, with the Combomod v3.02, or the Tough Alien Mod, or the Training Requirement Mod, and the First Camera Person v2 Mod, then one can put all of them together, or use them separate, and play an almost different game now!

Parts of XCOM were thrown in through the mods, but I have not tried some other mods, like enhanced graphics geosphere, which is also shown on that mod's page link up at the top.

The next game will include going into buildings, and whatever (I have not read totally up on it) and more of what players wanted, but the first game, since there was a time limit, and the code from XCOM was not usuable when they got it, and licenses expired, they did not have as much time, to make it better, but the game is fun.

UFO:Aftershock (the next game) takes place I guess from an orbiting platform built after the first game's Aliens made a deal with the remaining humans (which is one of the victory conditions in the UFO:Aftermath), because the last mission of UFO:Aftermath is quite a bit.

So, it plays different, but I guess, can be fun, if one can just except the game, for what it is, and still have some fun with it!

The mods mentioned can all be put together, or separate to use, and help add something to the game.

When playing it at first, it will be more difficult, than knowing how to play it, but still it is kind of fun, and funny, in a sense.

            Ready!
            What is it?
            Theis does not look good!
            I would if I could!
            mh...........................
            Your orders, Sir?

That one less of them to worry about!
            Killed the Bast*rd!
            Got em' !
Sir, I think I got 'em!

Chatter can be turned off though, as it drives some people crazy at first, but then, also I gotten used to it also, and it is kind of funny!

I've heard that sooooo much that they may as well called the game UFO Aftermath: This is NOT X-Com!

So four mods can be put together by just putting the file(s) in the main UFO:Aftermath folder for the game (where it was installed).

                ComboMod v3
                Tough Alien Mod
                First Person Camera Mod v2
                Training Requirement Mod

Not tried yet, but rather a large download there on that page of mods is:
Sounds and music from XCOM -- something like 37 mB or so. Have not tried that one.

And the game has 24 hour a day missions, but it may have been better to let the player see the tactical missions the same way, that the squaddies can observe down there in the thick of things yet coming at them.

I told them that! Take out the little white arrows that show the way, make it black except for what your best Squaddie can see, and all of that.

I guess the game is done though, so that will be that, and perhaps, they had a reason for it.!

And many things have changed with just those four mods.

Use one, or use them separate, or use those mods together.

                I would if I could!
That's one less of them to worry about!

                  Old thread

How's the game? Now that my new Windows box can actually run games with snappy graphics, I may want to pick up some of these games.

It looks a lot like XCOM. How does it play? How's the storyline?

That was soooo long ago. I liked Aftermath overall but only finished once and never played again. I remember a few things:

                    1. Don't let the aliens get close to you. Ever.
                    2. Arm everyone with sniper rifles.
                    3. Alien weapons didn't work very well against aliens.
                    4. Lots of East Bloc weapons. But then, the game designers are Czechs.
                    5. Squad sizes were smaller than X-Com. The research tree felt smaller.
                    6. Tactical combat is real time and a little more hectic.
                    7. Those missions become repetitive by mid-game.
                    8. UFO interceptions are done better in X-Com.

I liked it but I also never bought Aftershock, the sequel. The premise there is that you surrendered in the first game, put into orbiting reservations, and now want to take back Earth. I liked the first game better when I refused the surrender offer and fought to the end (which I won, the preferable outcome IMHO).

Sniper rifles inside the confines of a tiny spacecraft generally result in dead humans.

Still worked for me. The trick was still keeping them away from you (admittedly difficult inside a ship or base). The only time I ran into a problem was when a fire beetle was hiding behind a door. Even then, you don't have to kill all of the aliens to win a scenario.

Inside a base is ok, there you generally have a fair bit of distance between you and any enemies so sniping is a good tactic. I meant inside alien spaceships, where room is limited and most aliens are first within vision only a few squares away from your soldiers. There, a weapon that kills in one shot is needed.

Hurm. The orginal UFO: Enemy Unknown pretty much has gotten it exactly right. I have only serveral minor gripes:

                            1. There should be more than one way to win. For example, you should be able to win by attrition. The aliens should have only a limited number of ships and you can win if you destroy them all.

                            2. All the best weapons are based on alien stuff. I like to see the ability to create my own, such as advanced laser weapons or anti-alien toxins (one of the good ideas in Apocylapse).

Maybe they can just update the original version to a better engine, just like what Ur-Quan Masters has done for Star Control 2.
