        • For the record I also disagree with your thoughts, but agree that it would be good to "encourage" offense (or even offensive behaviour/posting ).

          Not sure how to do so without changing game balance though. Perhaps we have it right now in that the best way to win a nuclear war is not to start one?

          • How about allowing you to stockpile to five or six nukes? I'd be more comfortable with wiping out a foe in a single stroke without fear of retaliation. It might not be nice for game balance though.

                This game has always been this way. The only real way to make people attack is rewarding them, like in GO where you get bases. However in NW taking a base you just nuked seems strange.

                • How about being able to use in the game a single use miracle intervention. It would have the same effect as a bunker. Spies on encountering it would convert to religion and weapons would turn to butterflies. It can be used anytime even in conjunction with another non spy order. For example

                  if down to 1 or 2 bases

                  2 nukes to, let's see, oh yes Kass
                  Posse to Atragon (who may be sending posse/nukes/deflecting elsewhere than to you of course) and
                  use Miracle.

                  It buys you a one shot escape but deciding when to use it is the intriguing bit.

                  Its use would be distinguished from bunker use.

                    • Not making it easier, but encouraging it.

                      The only way I see to encourage it is to force it. Maybe 3 turns is too extreme, how about 5.

                      Think of it this way, you cannot just build through T5, by T5 you must attack, whether 1-4 nukes is up to you.

                      However, if you attacked on T2, then you would not have to do it again until T7.

                      We could even make it cumlative so that is you attacked on T2 and T3, you would not have to do it again until T13.

                      In this manner you cannot just build up to the max and wait. How long do you think it will take the noobs to figure out that waiting is the best strat?

                      • Attacking is easy, unless you want to consider the consequences. The ability to shield oneself from retaliaton, on the other hand, reduces offence too, since the other will just turtle.

                        Most tantalizing. I think our worry is premature though, there will be a time when you can't build any more cities, posses or bunkers.

                        Maybe allow stockpiling up to 6 nukes but only allow launching 4 at a time, so that you can launch 8 within two turns?

                        • I don't think you can count Whoha and Vlad as "noobs" and I think they are more interested in nuking as many people as possible before they are themselves eliminated rather then the best strat for winning.

                          As long as we continue to have people with this way of thinking (and the game dies without them) playing the game, it will continue.

                          I suppose you raise an interesting point however, if those players were eliminated early, the game would drag needlessly while the maxed out players wait for someone else to make a move.

                          Forcing someones hand after 5 turns (or any set number of turns) involves a strategy change all by itself however, as if someone hasn't attacked for 4 turns you can guess their orders much more easily then without this additional rule (they cannot be building, they cannot be bunkering or deflecting, good turn to send a spy their way and take them out).

                          I like the idea of forcing the attack, I just don't like the suggested solutions so far.

                          • Hence the change in strat. You are not going to wait until the last turn you have to nuke because someone will take advantage and get ugly all over you.

                            However, this would not be a posted stat, so you'd have to do some homework, more than most players would be willing to do.

                            It does mean a little more work for the GM.
