  • Since I am in a college dorm room and my space was limited I had to get a LCD monitor. I will say I am very happy with it. If you plan on gaming with an LCD monitor, you MUST play at its native resolution or the game will look like crap. For me, its native resolution is 1280X1024. The other thing you need is a fast reasponse time, otherwise you may get some ghosting. I believe mine is 16ms. The only way around it is if you play games in a window, but then your actual viewing area is smaller

In order to play most games at 1280x1024 with the visual settings at a decent level, you need a powerfull computer.

Bottom line is if you can afford a powerfull computer, an LCD monitor is a good choice.

This is more or less a lie... sure, there is some truth in it, but it's not the biggest reason for ghosting... The panel used in the monitor has the most to say.

As mentioned before, a S-IPS is the best panel, it has the most colors and the best response time. That is a response time of 25 in S-IPS is about the same as a reponse time of 16 in the TN+ panels. Of course those panels are more expensive, but worth the extra money spent...

I don't have any links about this, but try to do a search on this, I'm sure something will show up

Well for the money you spend on a LCD monitor that performs as you describe you can get a bigger and better quality CRT. I'd do that every time, unless I had space constraints, as you and Jamski do.

However, you pay more for compactness not extra quality.

        • A friend of mine has some damn expensive CRT monitor (LG) (expensive compared to CRT prices) and he says it's the best, but even if I had the room for it, I wouldn't buy that one, unless I had no other choice. I've been using his computer from time to time, so I know how it feels, but I just defently like the 'feeling' of the TFT monitor much better... It's not just about it being more compact...

                • I run my NEC 17" at 1024x768 85Hz. I found 1280x1024 was just too squinty when I lean back away from the desk.

Does anybody have any idea why its 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960 (which would be true 1:1 pixel spacing on a 4:3 monitor)? I had the feeling text wouldn't be so bad if the res was just a little less squished.

                  • Ok, I'm the odd one here: 800*600 @ 60Hz on a 15" CRT monitor... One day I'll have a LCD, probably when everyone is using holograms.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

I'm more curious about why some (very few) games only supports 1280x960 while they don't support 1280x1024... so far I've only seen this problem by console games converted to PC...
This is soo annoying, and I have yet to see what the point of such stupid resolution is
