nah - not my thing(believe it or not!). But i'm guessing by your evasion that i'm close?
I've got a picture in my head(infact i can see the graphic of the ferryman and the river) where you had to pay a ferryman gold to cross the river into the next world/level - he was death and the journey across the water was meant to be symbolic. I have a feeling it might have been an adventure game, but am not 100% on that.
Thats as good as i've got at the momment. It was a fairly well known game at the time, just need to remember what it was called

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.
although i've been good at wriggling out a bit more info, do i hear the call of 'more clues vicar' on the wind?
The game i'm thinking of i never played but read the review in a magazine and all i've got is a 'graphic adventure' type screenshot of the player as he meets with the ferryman and needs to pay the fee(gold) to cross the river. Thats it.
I've not been able to jog my memmory any more i'm afraid. So i definately need more clues please arcade/adventure/platform? - throw the book at us
