Talking initial 'wow' factor rather than actually great games (although some were)...

    80s Ant Attack, 3D on a spectrum
Lords oF Midnight, some much game in so little RAM

90s G Police, the graphics wowed me even though i never got more than a few levels in.
    Baldur's Gate, just so unexpected.
Syndicate (or was it Syndicate Wars ?) first game i saw on a PC which looked better than the Amiga version

00s Can't think of any but by now i had high expectations.

      Loderunner,

      Ooh, the memories...

      80s Ant Attack, 3D on a spectrum

Terrible game, great graphics for it's days
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

AntAttack? There's a very nice lady who's been working on a remake.

          And her development blog

                  00's:

The games were getting lame, relying too much on chrome (graphics and sound) instead of having good gameplay. Nothing really sticks out.
I agree Urban Ranger, it keeps getting harder and harder to find good games these days. As I noted, I hardly buy new games at all. Most of mine are pre 2000.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 1999 and Heroes of Might and Magic III 1999 were the last truly addictive/new idea games that I've played

OK, I'll give this a shot.

80's: didn't have a PC, loved Legacy Of The Ancients on my C64. My wife and I fought all the time about who was going to play it.

90's: it's a tie for the WoW factor. Master of Orion was impossible to stop playing. Duke Nukem 3D was really cool when I first started it up.

00's: ummm, I haven't done that many, but Dungeon Siege was really cool to start playing. the epitome of easy to play.

and I can't resist a couple more from the 90's: Diablo was a revelation to play, kinda the Dungeon Siege of the 90's. And no game ever had a cooler intro movie than Curse Of Monkey Island
Any man can be a Father, but it takes someone special to be a BEAST

I was just about to point out that Horsie is simply making excuses in advance for why he will suck at Civ III...

80s probably mario 1 that comes with nes. that's really the first video game i saw and played a lot.
90s quake 1 without a doubt. believe it or not i was much more wowed by internet multiplay than the first time ever real 3d graphics.
                      00s meh.

                        80s: Super Mario Brothers

                        90s: Donkey Kong Country

                        21st Century: Medieval Total War

Wow games that stayed great and/or got better over time:

                          SMAC
                          Diablo2

Wow games that started great then lost something:

UT2004 Onslaught Mode (still good, but no longer goddamn quality)
Morrowind (I ****ing hate this game now)

                            Civ 1, Civ 2, Civ 2, Civ 2, etc....

The first THPS game was a lot of fun. Sensible World of Soccer stole hours of my life, Elite and Frontier likewise. Is it time for another favourite games thread?
