i actually started playing roguelikes again a few days ago. i've never been able to really get into them very much. it seems like too much effort for too little return but i have a decent game going right now in zangband. level 12 high elf monk with a decent robe that sustains all my stats and boots of +12 speed. i have no clue how good that stuff is but it's many times better than i've seen before.

I've been reading abit and I think praying could be helpful, but I can't figure out how. What key is for prayer?

Praying is one of the extended commands. Type #pray. Try #? to have a list of all # commands.
(I'm currently running around in Gehennom with 7 tame dragons .)

I suppose you're all talking about that ASCII version... has anybody played the Falcon's Eye version of Nethack?
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

ASCII is the only way to play rogue-like games.

            ACK!

rogue-like games are fun for awhile. In the end, however, they are way too random for my tastes.

Alex: Any idea on has the development of falcon eye been stopped?

Latest news on his www-page was from march 2002.
And the Nethack interface is 3.3.1 (as the gamne is 3.4.0)

Roguelike are random, but some more than others. I can't stand angband's infinite dungeon randomness. NH is not that random to me, it's varied. If it was less, it would get boring. ADOM is not very random.
I think the latest NH version is 3.4.3 by the way. Don't know why they stopped Falcon's Eyes. I guess it worked, the guy who did it was pleased with it and didn't bother to upgrade it so it complied/sompiled with 3.4.

I have never played nethack enough to find out. However, ADOM is very random. One of my characters got a massively kickarse weapon on the first level of the first dungeon he entered, and the rest is history (both senses ).

Wow prayer does come in handy, I got food poisoning from an orc corpse, but by the power of Amaterasu Omikami I have been healed!
