Nethack

I couldn't find a (recent) thread about Nethack...
I finally managed to ascend that game! YAFAP! A barbarian, which is not the hardest class by far, but still. Dodging famine on the astral plane, killing shades in Orcus town, teleporting archons out of the way on the plane of fire and eating black dragons let me win that game once. I then checked the log to see how many attempts I had made and despaired.
I'll try to ascend a tourist or an archeologist next. See you in two years?

How on earth you play is beyond me. Maybe with a printout of the keymappings... First time I tried that game it took me 5 minutes to figure which key combo soft-quits. And that was with the graphical version.

Move towards them to fight, 'I' for Inventory, and you need to eat when you get hungry.

I'm still new to this game, but getting more hocked...

I'm playing as a Valkyrie (found some spoiler that said it to be the easiest)

Now I cheat as much as possible, have a lot of spoilers, keep savegames etc... and still having huge problems,


Question: Did you polymorph yourself in the game somewhere to somethig else? (In spoilers there is a lot of talk about polymorhing, but I find it very disturbing...)

No, that was a poly-less and elbereth-less ascension.
I may have polymorphed once without desiring to, but didn't do it on purpose. I also polymorphed some items but it wasn't in order to get a nifty magic item but in order to get rid of troll corpses which I couldn't eat away or throw into a moat or give to a pet and so they'd have been painful regenerating every other turn...
Valks and barbs are easier than other characters because they tend to resist monsters and give you at least the option to flee. Plus valks with Mjollnir have extra powers.
Polymorphing is useful for two things:
-Self in order to become something than can, for instance, walk through walls, breathe water or some such.
-Items in order to change a puny wand of nothing into a nice and nifty wand of wishing, if you are very lucky. Or to change a leather armor into a grey dragon scale mail. Of course, this is very unlikely to happen, but with perseverance, you may do it.
Anyway, the one thing to remember in Nethack in order to win is: Be paranoid.

Well, there's no num pad on my keyboard, for a start...

Actually there is no numpad on my keyboard either but it can be emulated ()j = 1, k = 2, l = 3, u = 4...). And if you can't, you don't need it, you can use hjkl to move left down up right (the vi keys).
