  • All purpose Planescape:Torment thread

    Just started playing PS:T.

Im enjoying it more than I did when i first installed it a few months ago. Either im more in "a good place" to deal with the ghoulishness, or coming back to it Im not surprised by it. And Morte is starting to grow on me. And I did manage to find my way out of the Mortuary, Sigil looks cool.

But I ended up in the
    Spoiler:
    nasty neighborhood near the memorial
, and thus was pursued by
    Spoiler:
    thugs
and ended up killed. The way the game handles that
    Spoiler:
with the PC being revived from the dead, is fascinating - its part of the plot - the PC cant really die - its an interface convenience - dont need to reload - and its a reference to the whole unrealistic aspect of the whole genre - "RPGs teach that when you die all you have to do is reload to live again
truely evidence that irony isnt dead.

Still I think I will restart, now that I know something.

No big hints, but would be interested in your thoughts about the beginning.

    1. What base stats should I try? I went for wisdom, let Morte have the intell. And some charisma - should be important in a game with less combat, but are the dialogue choices truely limited otherwise? Not sure about str vs dex - havent seen any ranged weapons yet. Went for const, thats always good, i think
    2. In my first go around I spoke to a dustie, and ended up having to fight or run after that. Is it possible by avoiding talking to the dusties, to avoid that? Is there any reason to talk to a dustie?
    3. With the bracelet of healing (or whatever its called) i dont need to use bandages, etc on myself do I? Save all those for Morte?

The bracelet is used up, sorry

Avoid talking to the "normal" Dusties in the Mortuary - remember, you're supposed to be dead. You can talk to most of the named ones safely though, and you should talk to all the zombies.

I suggest you get a decent INT WIS and CHA to start with, moderate/low STR, moderate/low DEX and moderate CON. Talking skills are VERY important in this game, and some checks require that you have INT, WIS or CHA of more than 21 Of course, with every level you gain, you increase 1 stat, so its easy to end the game with 25 in nearly everything, but early on, if you don't have the WIS, INT and CHA, you'll miss out on a lot of the game.

There are NO ranged weapons you can aquire, so don't plan on that.

Don't worry about healing too much. There's plenty of places you can rest. And if you do die... well...

Have fun, its a great game.

You mean the Dustman Embalming Charm? You can use it only 3 times. Or do you mean one of the other charms?

Sorry, I'm not quite clear what "bracelet of healing" you mean.

I'm not sure about NO ranged weapons.

There is a crossbow an NPC can use, but not really your PC.

So don't count on using ranged weapons. Just concentrate on blunt or edged. I think I used edged.

But I was a mage much of the game. So I casted spells. Dakkon' and Morte did much of the melee fighting.

              /me dodges the spoilers

I tried to start up my first game a few weeks ago but the resolution is awful. Is there any possible way to get it up from 640x480? I ended up clawing my eyes out after an hour or two. (Figuratively speaking, not in-game. Yes, I tried to remove my own eye in the inventory view.)

Not even a horrible kludge that involves me learning an obscure programming language and spending a week modifying the game files? Pretty please?

Yeah, it's not bad graphically, even though it's stuck in 640.

Yeah, the resolution stops being noticed after a few hours. Just like with BG1, FO and FO2 - the game is so good, and the graphics actually rather attractive, that you soon stop noticing.

Kassi - it gets better than pulling eyes out, don't you worry

Oh, it's not bad graphically at 640x480, not at all. Woe unto him who would suggest that I'd place graphics before the story, gameplay or atmosphere. It just saddens me to think how smoother the gameplay'd be with a larger part of an area on the screen at a time, and bigger text boxs (*clickety*read*clickety*read*clickety*).
