This is something that Civ3 fixed and I think we should try to address it too. In the picture below ships can sail between the two tiles joined by the red line across an isthmus of land. While this creates nice shortcuts sometimes, I think that ships should be forced to sail around.

There is an acceptation to this rule of course. I like the canals idea! Will help with graphics if called upon (I'm thinking that canals might have to be like road improvements for different directions of travel...)
I like the longship idea, maybe a unit flag for river travel, so it can be either a tech for those that want the option of a Unique Unit for mods like a viking invasion one...

Began work on bigger rivers last night I can't seam to find a balance between size of the river and the amount of tile left dry .

Disagree. Mostly. What it represents isn't a small portion of land that ships shouldn't be able to cross, but a small portion of sea that land units can get across on pre-Carrock level boats. Its the Spain-Gibraltar gap, the Bosphorus.
Any additions or alterations to the current rules would be way to complex to be worthwhile, IMO.Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

We have been working on the assumption that a river is a river onto of a tile what about a river tile. we already know the random map generator is up for a major looking at we just put it in then (with the added underwater terrain)
