  • Same Civs every time I start a game

    hi,

I have come back to Ctp2 after a lengthy absence. Enjoying it but am encountering a problem I do not remember from before. Every game I start, the same Civilizations are selected. It's always English, Welsh, Scottish and American. If I choose to have more Civilizations than that, there will be some other ones, but those four are always included. It's getting a bit tedious. Is there a text file somewhere where this has somehow become fixed in place? Or some other setting? Is there some way I could try removing the above-mentioned countries from being considered as choices and see what happens?

Someone had the same type of problem back in 2015: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-gam...me-3-opponents. Although here it is England, Scotland and Ireland.

I am running the SDL version of the game, though I don't think this will be part of the problem assuming the 2015 issue was the same as this one.

There's a file called "civilisation.txt" in the ctp2_data\default\gamedata directory. Assuming you are using the 2011 Apolyton Edition, that file contains 70 civs, and you can move them around to new positions in the file (except Barbarians, those have to stay as #1). Scots are #4, Irish #5 and English #6, so yeah, I can see why they appear in most of your games. As an example, you could take # 41 (Mongols) and move them up to #4 while moving the Scots down to # 41

From what I understand of that Civ game of yours, it's all about launching one's own spaceship before the others do. So this is no big news after all: my father just beat you all to the stars once more. - Philippe Baise

Thanks - I played around with civilizations.txt and it is indeed as you say. Choose a number of civilizations and it will count down that number in the text file to provide the civs for the game. The top-listed ones are Scots, Irish etc so by default they are the ones that appear. However the counting takes place starting at civ no. 3 in the listing, not no. 1. The first two civilizations don't appear; one of them is the Barbarians, so that makes sense. The other one is Greece, which seems odd. And why should civ no. 2 be excluded at all?

But the bigger picture is that unlike the Civilization games, in CtP2 which Civilization you play doesn't really matter that much. As far as I can tell the civs are just labels, and it doesn't matter if the label is "Scots" or "Assyrians".

In the base game the only real difference comes from the AI Leader traits, which affect how they interact with others, primarily the human player. That's one reason (of many) why I like the Cradle Mod, since it uses slic coding to give every civ (both human and AI) a set of distinctly different advantages. For example, here are just 4 of the 32:

Egyptian Traits are +10% Production, +3 Happiness, Size 2 Cities, -50% PW Costs for Farms, +2 Religious Influence per Turn, and Veteran Chariots.

Etruscan Traits are +10% Production and Veteran Praetorians.

Greek Traits are +20% Production, +2 Boat Movement, +.5% Gold Interest per Turn, Instant Healing after Battles, -50% PW Costs for Ports, and Veteran Hoplites, Pezheteroi, Biremes, Triremes.

Han Traits are +20% Production, +2 Happiness, +15% Walled City Attack, +2 Religious Influence per Turn, and -50% PW Costs for Farms.

In this mod, choosing your civ is much more than colors and city names.

Sounds good - look forward to trying it out once adaptation is complete.

The adaptation is complete, in the sense that it works seamlessly with the the AE-2011 Source Code release. There are some glitches and a lot of (to me) minor historical irritations but even before that is cleaned up for the v5.1 release (which is probably 6 months or so out), the v5.0 mod is complete and ready for download (see the link and installation instructions in Post# 364)

It might be worth taking a look at the first release, since Cradle is quite different from the base game.
