My site (see homepage) covers some tricks that make it incredibly easy to get one over the current AI (or compete with a human), such as using specialists right - something the AI could never do at the moment.

But I hope most of it becomes obsolete anyway or at least situation dependant, once we balance the AE properly it will be much more difficult to decide whats right. So when that happens maybe we're better off not providing a strategy guide at all. Afterall you dont get a guide telling you exactly what to do to win with a new game, even those crappy Prima guides theyre basically manuals and they only give obvious hints and hidden calculations. Although at £9.99 or whatever you expect it to play the game for you.

I finally got some time this past weekend to get some time in on CtP2.

So far, I'm really enjoying this game. It does take some getting use to. I read (finally!) the links posted in this thread and I'm grasping the differences with Civ3. The ring thing really takes so getting use to. The concept makes sense to me...

So, my first game, on an easy setting, minus the suggested mods/patches is too easy. I wiped out the English, French and Americans pretty quickly. So my next game will be on harder setting. How tough is tough in CtP2? In Civ3, Diety or SID level is just really impossible due to advantages given to the computer.

Cradle mod on Impossible is probably the hardest, then Call to Conquest. In Cradle though once you claw your way into the lead you rarely lose it because the AI cant keep increasing its science and resources so well, or at least thats what happened in the games i played. But in CtC its always possible to lose the lead if youre at war with a lot of AI's, just look at our succession game.

Okay, that's good to know. I think a game is infinitely more interesting when the AI has the ability to surpass you, despite building up a good lead.

Maq, thanks for the quick responses. It's a big help.

I'm going to finish my current game, start another one with a harder difficulty setting. Then I'll take a look at those mods. I just wanted to get a sense for the "vanilla" CtP2 game before I started applying new rule sets.

Just maybe I can leverage up to lurking in the CtP2 succession game and/or democracy game forums.

...but the democracy game is dead, and has been more or less since the release of the source code.

The city limit I personally find annoying or at least wrongly done, but overall CtP2 is indeed the best Civ game to date.
30 cities, right? Is there some way around it, via modding or whatever?

I would hate to be limited to 30 cities.

The city limit is different depending on your government. Unmodded its 10 in Tyranny to 60 in Ecotopia/Virtual Democracy, and it can be easily modified in govern.txt anyway.

The limit isn't forced on you. You can build more cities than the city 'limit', you just loose out on the efficency that they produce things.

So even say in a Tyranny(limit 10 cities) - you can have 20-30 cities if you wanted, its just better to invest in the science to discover more efficent forms of government.
'The very basis of the liberal idea – the belief of individual freedom is what causes the chaos' - William Kristol, son of the founder of neo-conservitivism, talking about neo-con ideology and its agenda for you.info here. prove me wrong.

If you want lots of cities, try anarchy! Its limit is 1000 (from memory).

Only catch is, no taxes or science. Oh well, just assign taxmen and scientists.

Unfortunately you wont get many specialists before your city starves because of low food in anarchy. And production in each city wont be much use for anything, even mass producing units from a thousand cities (if you get that far before the game is over ) you wont have many. Assuming you give each city at least one ring or ones in mountains/hills half a ring to collect from could you even fit 1000 cities on the default size gigantic map?
