I heard a loud voice, I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! It's rider was named Death, and hades was following close behind him. They were given power over one fourth of the earth to kill by the sword, famine and plague.

      Sure it can.

Milamber was top of the ladder as far as I remember before I won. Therefore he must be no. 2 now according to Note 3 §2 .

Note 3: Ladder positions change when a player lower on the ladder defeats a player higher on the ladder. When a lower ladder player defeats a higher ladder player:
      1) the lower player takes over the ladder position of the higher player;
      2) the higher player moves down one slot on the ladder;
      3) the lower player attains the BAID level of the higher player (if different).

      Edit:

Ok, I now see, that thehappies defeated Milamber first, sending him one slot down. The I defeated thehappies the same day (Apr. 7th), sending both Milamber and thehappies down one slot.

My victory over Milamber Apr. 30th does not change anything then (except giving me one "point" more). Neither does thehappies victory over PrinceBolkonsky Apr. 5th.

No other challenges have been finished the last month - or???

If I have understood the notes correct, then the top of the ladder should then be:

      TheBirdMan
      thehappies
      Milamber
      ....

And no ruins either - then "Ok" with me.

        • will have to do some serious rechecking

the last time I took the ladder from the previous thread
and went game by game to see who would have been displaced by whom

taking out inactives as I went

maybe it was step three that I forgot to do, but most activety was in diety level

Is there a third person to verify ....

Trying to keep the books from getting out of control

I thought it was agreed that it could happen, but only if the challengee agreed, depending on their other commitments, etc.

              • Books, Question and a Challange

                Addled P,

I have some game business to report and also a question.

                Quinns- I have a question

                Keygen- You've been served!

                ******

First, in Challange 172 PrinceBolkonsky Defeats iDestroy
iDestroy conceded 04/29/07 on turn 87.

We have immediately scheduled a rematch which began on 4/30/07 please assign us a game number.

                ******

I am in a challange game against ricketyclik, this is game #170. I'm not sure where rickety was in the standings when he accepted my challange but it would seem that we too would have been too far apart.

Also, I have a challange game against Quinns that began at the same time as the game between iDestroy and Quinns. Were all of us too far apart?

Quinns- Wasn't our game a challange game? I realize now that our game was setup over e-mail and not on the ladder thread. Perhaps you thought it was not a challange. It slipped my mind to inform AP and get a number.

                ******

Finally, whether or not my games against Rickety or Quinns can or will go forward as challange games, I should now be in position to challange Keygen.

I formally challange Keygen to a match!!

                • Addled P,

If the standing order is current, and my thinking is correct I should now be between Gramps and iDestroy.

If my games with Quinns and ricketyclik and Keygen go forward and including my rematch against iDestroy, I should be at

                  1 Win
                  1 Loss
                  4 in progress!

                  Thankyou

                  • After action commentary

In my game against iDestroy I was lucky and able to get going quickly. I found myself on a landmass separated from all contenders and was able to devote my full attention to development of a commanding lead early in the game. iDestroy began the game locked between two AIs. We were playing on a regular sized map with pbem lite. This difference in starting positions seems to be a difficult hurdle in games on regular sized maps. On larger maps this seems much less of a problem.

On regular sized maps, I believe it is only the very experienced player that can compete when stuck between two AIs against a Human player with ample resources but who is separated from direct AI competition. The problems of defending against clerics and slavers or against an aggressive AI put a steady drain on early development. This is what happened to me in my game against theHappies, my first defeat on the challenge ladder! You can’t let yourself get bogged down against a player like Aaron!

I am currently in a game against Ken Pierce where I am up against 2!! Slavers AND a Cleric each facing me with a broad front and Ken is separated from this action -he says on some islands. I am doing much better in this game. I stalemated the less aggressive cleric using mountainous terrain to stop his expansion. I managed to quash one slaver by first eliminating his first round of slavers and then managing to find and kill his first round of settlers! He now has decided to be my friend and expand in another direction. The other settler has moved into war mode and has had a little bit of success slaving as well. Fortunately he is separated from me by a greater distance across a large mountainous area. I have managed to kill two slavers. Because he is farther away and I am sure more slavers are coming, I chose to build slavers of my own instead of abolitionists or just diplomats. Consequently I have been able to replace most of my losses to slaving with slaves of my own captured in battle while sweeping his raiders from my lands and also detect his slavers and kill them. If he were closer I might have chosen to go the abolisionist route. I am still managing to mass settle, though still less than usual and now more secure I am paying special attention to developing enough trade to keep competitive. It is still quite early in the game. I still plan on being a bit behind in the middle game but not so far as to have lost the game. I find this problem to be one of the most interesting in CTP1.

I still like CTP1 best when played on a regular sized map. The AIs are more of a challenge, unit movement ranges are appropriate and everything is just more intense! The governments are a bit off being more suitable to larger maps. If it were up to me I'd increase distance as a factor in unhappiness and lower government city threshold substantially for games on regular sized maps. By the same token I would double! movement of all units on larger maps.

                          • ya he beat me

Prince beat me bad the first game. the close enemies did pose a problem but what was worse was the terrible terrain. I will not build cities where most of the land is swamps or desert and thats all i had around me. Call me picky but u just cant grow a city well on crap.

in the new game i have already achieved a huge lead by turn 18. We are playing with large maps and whatever else, i forget. but anyways hes going to have a hard time this round.
