me too
We tested them tonight, well with norton firewall.... not a good test but...98 and xp are a go, played a few games today... u? ;0)

Or do we?
still nothing for me ! and i do not have any software firewall or os firewall on !!! Mac OS X is not like xp ... it's quite easy to set on/off the firewall ... but it must be something else ... ( we don't "catch" virus or trojan as easily as pc platforms ) and i made the "nat create" u told me to do in the terminal to open the server ports ... hmmmmmm ........ are there some linux players around ? our os is more similar to their ( both unix platform ) ...
Is there any server running? I tried to connect to any server, i also did downlaod the server.dat file from apolyton, but still the same problem: it continues searching for servers ..... and continues .... and continues...

Nl. server is different it jumps around so I would avoid it but here goes: 195.193.163.56 again outgoing port is 21157.
The tricky part is the incomming UDP port it jumps around too, so it starts at: 21120, 21130, 21140, 21150, 21190. It also comes in on 21220 to 21260.
So if you program your firewalls and your network to allow this information we should be able to use xp for hosting.
Now I did program my firewall to allow the games. server tonight on high security. The ping was 2000+ until I told it to allow the games. address. Once done it settled back to 200 or so where it usually is without the firewall on. So the address is correct as the nl. server was still 4k or so still after making the adjustment to the firewall by adding the games. server address and leving it on high security.
So it would seem to me we need to tell xp with the firewall on to allow UDP ports 21120 to 21290 for incomming. 21157 for out going and again let xp figure out the server address. I would recomend the games server as it seems static.
i tried but unsuccessfully - i got a modem/router + switch but no firewall on
and til waiting for the servers ........ when trying to connect ...

and frustrated !!!
I feel the same
I also have a MAC.
I did port forwarding for ports 21120, 21130, 21140, 21150, 21190, 21220, 21230, 21240, 21250 and 21260. I also told my Firewall to allow ports 3, 21120-21190, 21220-21260 and 21157.
But it still does not work. CTP is really strange. It's the only and first multiplayer game, that i know, that needs such a number of ports and still does not work. Any other game that i play only uses a single port and can be easily hosted and joined by giving a certain IP. Why is CTP so complicated? The old Civ II gold works fine!
I dont want to surrender, so please give us any good hint that can help us. Is there any MAC user out there who can play CTP multiplayer via Internet?
Ok, here is what the documentation of the Anet server software says about firewalls:
*** Firewall Support - Server ***
For those of you trying to run the server behind firewalls:
The server code uses local UDP port 21157. The clients connecting to
the server let the OS select a random local port number, and send from
that port to the server's port 21157; the server replies from port 21157
to the client's random local port.
The server cannot run behind firewalls that do port or address translation; the
only firewalls it can run behind are straight port filters.
*** Firewall Support - Games ***
For those of you trying to run Anet games behind firewalls:
This release will provide support for some port and address-translating
firewalls. Only those that allow 'party line' use of an open port
are supported (that is, they must reuse the same port number/address
for all packets sent from the same port/number address on the client,
regardless of destination). Many firewalls do not support 'party line' use.
Only games released after October 1998 can use this feature. Earlier games
do not contain the needed client code.
No just that you have to have the right firewall to be able to play through it. If all of you people go straight pipe without firewall you'd be online playing eons ago.
You may even get away with just doing a dmz and try that. CTP is too old to make use of the new "nat" and other tehnologies.

So port forwarding will never work for CTP? As far as i tried, it does not work. I did add port 21157, too. Still no server found
"CTP is too old"? Well i do play a lot of older games (CIV II, AOE, Netfungus), and all of them work online!!
Hm, can it be that the servers.dat file has to be especially made for MAC? Is just a wild guess ...
