the game was only crashing when someone tried to contact me. that can be solved by installing two modified text files.

Sorry, I missed your post the first time.
No, it won't make other games crash.
          - For already running games it makes no difference.
          - For newly started games (off the CTP version with the modified files), you just have to make sure that the new 43rd civ (Dornheimer) isn't part of any MP/Email game you start. This rarely happens even with 8 civs in the game. Even if it does you can just restart the game.

Also, it is easy to switch between modified and unmodified text files. I have a ZIP file for the modified files and one for the original files. To switch you just unzip (with overwrite) the respective ZIP file.

          • We may be needing some replacements in the Q game soon. We are only in turns 9 or 10 right now, no quickstart mod used IIRC, so a very fresh game.
We will also need a moderator there.

            • I'm willing to step into a game if it's needed. I have no expectation of victory, so I don't care what state my CIV would be in.

That's funny. The game thread says you are already in.

Still in need here. One player probably needs to be replaced soon.

                    • We need a replacement for Troll in A simple matter of Domination.

                        Correction: We do not anymore.

But we could still use a moderator in the above mentioned Q game. I'm not sure if I want/should moderate AND play a second game.

                        • I'd be willing--though perhaps not able--to act as moderator. What is involved, and what is a "Q" game?

Q is simply the name of the game, it doesn't refer to any particular method of play.

As a moderator you have to make sure the turns keep flowing. I've come to the following procedure in games I moderate:

                            - Everyone is supposed to CC every turn to me and I keep them in an overviewly manner in my emails.

                            - Occasionally, ideally once per day, though in practice more like every 2 days, I check the CC's of the game.

                            - If a turn is due for more than 24 hours after the original send I resend it to the recipient with a CC to myself, marking it as a resend.
As of recently, I've gone to posting the resend in the game thread as well.

                            - If a turn is due for more than 24 hours after the resend, I "next" the player. That means I open his turn and end it again.
If I'm playing in that game as well, I do this without looking at the game situation. You can easily do this by opening the turn, limiting your sight to just the lower right corner of the screen and when the turn is loaded and the "end turn" button appears hit the 'n' key on your keyboard. You may occasionally still see the research menu after hitting the end turn button, if it came up during that turn. But with some practice you simply ignore it and close the game.

                            - If I next a player I post it in the game thread and usually I try to send him an email too reminding him that he was nexted.

In addition to these things, being a moderator occasionally requires to work out a consensus of how certain game issues are handled between the players, e.g. if the above nexting rules should be strictly applied or the occasional exception be made.
Also, sometimes players will send wrong turns or forget to attach turns. Just have an eye on that. In the latter case the receiving player will usually notice it right away.

                            • Hmmfff. Sounds more like an "expeditor" than a "moderator". Still, I'd be willing to lend a hand if necessary.

Do you want to moderate "Q" ?
