Note to windows users - remember that you can download Andreas Kemnade's Win 32 port with or without sound support from here:

      1.14.0-beta1 w/o sounds, 2.84 MB
      1.13.0 w/o sounds, 2.92 MB
      1.13.0 with sounds, 3.91 MB

AFAIK there is no copy of 1.14.0-beta1 with sound, or any copies of 1.14.0-beta2, available yet.

That sounds like a question for Andreas. Either the without sounds versions are just missing the music, or they are missing the music and the code to use it.

I suspect the later, and so if you want sound on windows, you need to get 1.13.0 with sounds.

Personally I usually play with the sounds off and a CD playing.

I got it from Andreas Kemenade once but there isn't really an author for this I believe. Anybody could have created it. This file simply allows you to use (your legally obtained) Civ2 sounds. Just like civ2gfx
needs your original Civ2 graphics*. It doesn't actually include the sounds themselves.

*Civ2gfx works fine with any Civ2 scenario as well. So you could also use those units and convert them to Freeciv format

                artists = "
This spec-file is meant to be used with
original Civilization 2 sounds. Copy your
legally obtained Civ 2 soundfiles from your
Civ 2 sound/ directory and into the Freeciv
data/civ2/ directory. Now run the client
                with the --audio civ2sounds option.
                "

; list of all standard sound tags can be found in stdsound.spec
; you can expect any standard freeciv installation to have sounds
                ; for these tags
