Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Agree the second shot does look better. Is this for an improved version of the bigisotrident tileset?

It could be, for the moment it's a field experiment. To see how big units would look, how quickly to do touchups and how they function in-game.

Double res is 4x the normal resolution of a Civ2 unit. Which means you can stuff in a lot more details (if you want).
Touching up isn't really that hard, the one above took far less than an hour. High quality tweaking might take longer.

There are some programs to upscale paletted images, for purposes just like this. One of the first ones I found was 2xSAI.
There's also a page listing some other upscalers. hq2x also seems to give good results.

Hq2x has some excellent results! I can almost imagine such a scaler in a Civclient.

Plus it would save a lot of work in retouching double res graphics.
