Just delete the ACmap.bmp from the end of the address... It worked for me!
"Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outwards, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendent, and to embrace them is to achieve enlightenment."

I can't seem to find that map.

Is that map different from the original SMAC-X map? If so, what are the main differences?

Also, I'm curious why Michael Ely wouldn't use the official map for all 3 books? It would make it a lot easier to follow the story and contienets, and where everything is located.

          Just downloaded it.

          I noticed several interesting stuff.

What are these radiation symbols and concentric circles for?

I noticed the freshwater contient is empty except a few splotches of color. That looks odd, since how did they set colonies all the way over there? Sail by Hive areas?

I think that somebody played with singularity busters, probably Miriam, but I haven`t read the book .

IIRC, Busters lower the terrain A LOT, therefore we'd see small lakes, therefore small blue spots in the middle of these colored regions.

In addition, these red dots on the map must be capitals / first base, right?

It is a book. Why did he place all factions on the same continent though? Looks like sloppy work for me.

I think it would make more friction, with less land to go around. Higher states of tension, coupled with Man's tendency to war for more land and resources.

But again, I think that at least one or two factions should have been placed in the Freshwater sea Continent. If I played a SMAC game like that, and the whole contient was devoid...

                  MASS COLONIZATION! MASS POWER BASE!

Then use all the power I gain along with 100's of jets, gravships, etc. to smash my "home contient" and conquer EVERYTHING!

In the books, planet busters are launched. I'm not sure, but I think they are Sin Busters.

The map overall looks good to me. But when you use a PB, they don't always create lakes. Depending on the heigh of the target tile, that might become a lake.

It's great when you use your nuclear sub-transport launch Sin Busters offshore into the enemy's territory. 5 usually destroys the entire land-based cities.

Ahh... me thinks I need to get the books to understand the whole thing.

Well, if you think about it, why would the factions all be conveniently spread around the planet? The pods came from the same colony ship, so it would make a certain amount of sense if they landed in the same general area.

Regarding PBs - am I the only one who wonders why using Sin. busters doesn't cause a global extinction event? The amount of energy required to cause hundreds of kilometres of land to simpl vanish has got to be enough to at least cause a global environmental catastrophe, not merely lower the clean mineral limit by 5.

Why would they go in the same direction? In the opening movie pods spread in all directions (and still pretty far away from planet), so I guess they land on different continents. But all factions landing on same continent

Well, it would have to depend on how far away the Unity was from Planet when the pods separated - was this ever specified?

EDIT: In Ely's books, that is.

It is? In intro movie pods are enough far away to spread around before landing on planet.

                                Clean Mineral reduced by 5?

Pardon me, but I don't remember what it means or entails. Does it mean all your mineral output is reduced by 5?

Obstructor, I remember the intro movie showing the pods detach from the ship and fly towards the planet.

But I don't remember if they flew to the planet bunched together or in completely random directions.

I really should start up SMAC-X to refresh my memory on a lot of stuff.
