  • New team game wanted

    Marky and I would like to kick off another team game. He and I are close friends IRL and even if we tried to stay at arms length in a free for all game, we would probably subconsciously give each other extra consideration. So if we are going to play in the same game, it makes sense for it to be a team game where collusion is expected and encouraged.

    We both play with a very fast turn rate, usualy 1-2 turns per day, most often we can play a turn within a couple of hours of receiving it. We would like opponents who also enjoy a fast turn rate.

    We currently have a game going on a podless modified vets map, which seems like a good balanced environment, but we would be open for other possibilities as well. As for map settings, which factions to allow or ban, extra rules, etc, we would be open to allowing our opponents decide most of those things.

    There are three things that I would want to insist on:
    1. No AI. In my opinion, even enhanced AI unbalances the game.
    2. No copters. Some people have the copters can't attack bases rule, but that just allows copters to take safe refuge in a base after they have wiped out everything nearby, making attacks very difficult. The multiple attack capability of copters is just too powerful.
    3. No Pirates or Alien factions.

    I would perfer not to have pods, again for reasons of balance, but I understand that factions such as Spartans, Believers, Gaia, and Hive, as well as some of the Alien Crossfire factions, are disadvantaged by elimination of pods, and would understand wanting to include pods if such factions are selected.

    As I throw down the gauntlet, perhaps I can create more interest by mentioning that I have never been defeated in a multiplayer game. Perhaps someone wants to earn the bragging rights of handing me my first defeat?

    So, are there two people, other than Florin and Dan, who are our opponents in our other game, who would like to team up to challenge us? Even if you don't have a partner, post with your setting preferences, and perhaps two people can decide to team up on this thread.

    It's a good challenge mmontgomery.

    But the commitment to a usually, 2 year 6 months pbem game doesn't attract: even with that turn rate.

    Nevertheless let's discuss. You reference Florin and Dan: so occasions playing IP should be possible?

        I have only had success with LAN based IP games. Someday, I may need to try to debug why I can't get WAN based IP games to work, unless the host has a static IP address.

        Marky's Excellent Adventure with Florin and Dan is moving along at a great rate, I think. I hope to acheive a similar rate on this game I wish to start. I have found that when games have a slow turn rate, people lose interest and the game dies.

        However, I have played several PBEM games to conclusion in a 6 month time frame or so, including most recently OLD PBEM and SLOW BURN. So PBEM games don't have to drag on for over a year; in fact, such games are probably doomed.

          I am surprised at the lack of interest. I thought the open parameters, where the opponents could set up the game most any way they wanted, would draw some attention. What are people looking for in a game?

              You are probably right, although I think most active players would probably be able to manage 1 turn per day on most days, by checking email once in the morning and once in the evening.

              I am thinking mostly for the first 50 turns or so. Games usually slow down a bit after 50 turns, since there gradually gets to be more to do each turn.

                bdanv want to take them on?? I could play a turn a day. Sounds like a good challenge.

                So yeah, i'll play if bdanv wants to play also. What factions would you two be playing?

                    I am already involved in 3 other games with bdanv. I imagine he would like a break from me .

                    So, would anyone other than bdanv or florin like to team up with SmacxVeteran?

                    As for our factions, it would depend upon the setup that you choose, and which factions you choose to bar from the game.

                    For example, if you choose abundant native life, you can be sure that either me or Marky will play Gaia.

                    If you picked standard native life, no pods, no factions barred (other than aliens and Pirates), then we would probably pick University and Free Drones.

                    Of course, with moderated setup, there can be duplicate factions, so you and your partner can pick whatever factions you want, regardless of what we pick.

                      Alternatively, it could just be me playing as 2 factions vs you two. I am a pretty good player. The advantage to this would be that the turn speed would be enchanced.

                      If this would be the case, i'd take Hive/CyCon. What sized map would it be?

                          Two factions each is fine with me. And this looks like a very strong matchup.

                          Take a look at the setup for Marky's Excellent Adventure. It features a Vetrans Map modified by Mart7x5 for balanced start. No pods. I could take the NE and NW continents, and you could have the SE and SW continents.

                          One rule I asked that we add for MEA was no copters. I strongly feel the multiple attack capability of copters is vastly overpowered, and that the game plays better without them.

                          Turn order could be:
                          1. Cycon
                          2. Hive
                          3. University
                          4. Drones

                          If there is anything you want to change about the setup, or if you don't like the Vets Map, let me know. Otherwise, if you are agreeable, we could ask Mart7x5 to set us up.

                          If you like, we can ask Mart7x5 to start each faction with 50 energy. This would allow the energy-poor Hive to make a society change right away, to help compensate for what otherwise would be a weak start.
