Looks like I beat Monty posting again.

OK, I will only reload on crash. I'll just be more careful with the interface to try to avoid disaster.

Yes, I only reload on crash as well. And I have figured out most of the things that cause a crash to avoid them. On my computer, if my screen locks from inactivity, I am virtually guaranteed a crash. And the computer is set by company policy to screen lock in 5 minutes of inactivity. So if I have to walk away from the game, I just save it.

Another thing that can cause a crash is clicking on certain messages. So I just avoid clicking on any message, and try to figure them out for myself.

There are a few other things that regularly cause crashes, but I can't recall right now.
