Darsnan-- I think you did what we hoped. Your eradications took away any of my easy bases to conquer yet you left a nice few forces around to be a pain in my butt.

It'll be a bit of work to clean up and I don't think I will gain much

Flubber read the message and looked at his chief of covert operations

" Well we could not crack the actual message as it was sent by private courier But THIS message was sent over an open channnel which EVERY faction on planet can decipher. So our Analysis section is puzzled and divided on the meaning."

"One team thinks that the fact that the new leader of the Gaians, Sir Darsnan, has held broader planetary functions is key. The suspect that the communication is innocent and may be related to one of those functions. They cite the open nature of the above message on a channel the Peacekeepers KNOW we would see, as evidence that of the innocence of the matter. They also cite our long and co-operative relationship with the Peacekeepers."

"Another team is in the middle. They see the Peacekeepers as merely continuing on with normal factional business.If some benefit goes to our enemies, it is not designed as such but merely a group doing that which is in their own self interest as they are undoubtedly expected to do."

A third team believes the Peacekeepers are aligned against our interests. They cite this communication as a fake-out in that someone that was actually against our interests would NEVER risk so openly communicating with our enemy. The idea is that acting so openly oblivious to our conflict is an attempt by the Peacekeepers to seem innocuous. This team assumes the secret communication is directly against our interests. They cite the obvious tech trading involving the Peacekeepers as a sign they are aligned against us. They have also adopted a Foreign Office report indicating that the failure of the Peacekeepers to provide us with a tech owed to us and their role in usurping us as governor means that we no longer have any treaty or pact obligations outstanding to them, while the Peacekeepers are in breach"

Hackerflub sighed " Has your section reached any decision?"

" No sir. The functional teams are hopelessly divided and all equally vehement in their conclusions. The division chiefs are non-commital and have all provided reports that mention a potential threat but advocate awaiting further developments. So no one is taking a stand"

Hackerflub grimaced " Can you take a stand on this?"

The chief smiled " Actually no. WE have the best covert operations and analysis people on this entire world by far but there are times when DON'T KNOW means exactly that."

"I'll accept that for now", Hackerflub turned toward the military generals seated at the left side of the conference table . .. " I need a military update . .. Bruce no I'll hear from you later on the Gaian front.. I want to hear everything I can about the Peacekeeper matter."

A youthful colonel stood from his seat back against the wall . . " Sir that would be me. Colonel Peters . . .The Southern Command remains the quietest and with the lowest threat alert of any command in the military. Our regional threat assessment is at the lowest possible level although all our troops are on LEVEL 2 Alert due to prximity of the Gaian front. THis compares with a LEVEL 3 along the western and northern frontiers and a Level 5 in Gaian Territory. Intelligence reports no increase in Peacekeeper military preparation or readiness"

Hackerflub visibly relaxed at that news " And what of OUR status?"

" Well sir . Southern Command is the smallest command by any measure. Troops, shipping and aircraft number about one third those under Central Command and about one-sixth that of the Gaian Task Force. Our mission has been to patrol and defend the southern approaches to the nation and to provide supply and medical services to the Gaian Task Force. With respect sir, our estimate is that our defences are capable to handle any threat on PLanet and we are maintaining a status of 85% operational readiness"

"Well thank you. I appreciate you diligence. The one thing earth history amply demonstarted was the intelligence of remaining prepared in the supposedly unexpected areas" said Flubber to the obviously relieved colonel. Hackerflub turned to the 4 star general adjacent to him . ." Now Bruce can you tell me what has happened to Gaian campaign ?"

So, the knifes are out (with an unprovoked hacker attack on the current seat of planetary government). I have warned the leaders of this world about this for 50 years... oh well it matters not now

I'll probably need even longer for turns (including this one already) now that there's war but then it won't be that many i guess

This turn was very very long so the weekend was best. Heck I spent about half an hour just looking at things and considering. I almost went a completely different route.

OUt of character-- this simply put is the best move for me to try to win the game. AS you all boom, I will not be able to out-research four (or even 3 factions). I have only had one PBEM that was completely peaceful and that was because the geography meant that no one was close to my core-- You sebp, with your continual worry about me placing bases within PB range of YOUR core highlighted my problem in that the PKs have almost their entire empire within PB range of MY core. I could not see a way to protect the risk given where ODPs sit in the tech tree versus PBs

In character, the PKs called the Angels some years ago and professed friendship and pact. I accepted that at the time even though I suspected it was all a ruse (but it got me some years as governor). In the course of that supposed friendhip, the Angels sent numerous techs to the PKs and the PKs were supposed to send one back. They didn't and cited unavailability of any techs the Angels did not have. By my count, we are now at the 8th or 9th tech selection for the PKs since then and they have yet the provide that tech back (and it was impossible that they did not ever have the opportunity). Out of character I fully expected this but IN character, this would be a moderately unfriendly act and not consistent with a supposed ally.

Sebp -- are you going to tell me that you guys would not have done a 3 way attack on me at some point if given the opportunity??

Yes wars are time-consuming and there will be a LOT of considering and diplomacy I guess. and I don't hazard a guess on how well this would go for me . . .
