Use them for secret projects early in the game as the early ones can often be game defining before you have crawlers. Later the techs are more useful.Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Secret projects - move them to a base building one or if they're in a base when you start one they'll become active and telling them to "hold - h" will give you the option of using them for minerals.
Technologies - Build a network node and the same as above, moving or ending turn in that base allows you to connect them to the node and gives you an instant tech (you don't get to choose it however so it can be risky and destroy your beeline by giving you something you didn't want)Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. I agree with Lazerus, but I hate to give strategy advice because people have different opinions. But yes, I would suggest spending a couple of artifacts early on for your favorite secret project.
After you get crawlers, it is a waste in my opinion to use artifacts for projects. Research slows down later in the game; many times I would gladly pay 50 minerals for a technology advance if I could, so I reserve the artifacts for technology advances.
Just my opinion. Others go tech all the way, even at the beginning.

With different advice I can get a start, I kinda feel like I have a small Bic-Clic Lighter in a Huge Hotel and a thousand rooms and trying to find my way around.
Please give advice and I shall take under advisement

OK, a bit more advice on technology. Again, I can only state what I personally like to do. Other people can feel free to give contradictary advice.
As Gaia, I would follow a beeline toward Green Society. I would first go for Secrets of the Human Brain, to get the free tech advance, then on to Centauri Empathy. During this time, I would hoard my energy, not spending much on rushing.
I would then switch to Green society. This will give you +4 efficiency. +4 efficiency allows you to put all of your efforts into Research without any loss of effectiveness, so that is what I would do as long as I could. You don't get any more income coming in, but you almost double your research rate. This is why I said to be frugal with energy at the beginning of the game. This doubling of research rate is really helpful for awhile.
Next I go for Doctrine: Flexibility, and start building boats to pop pods at sea, and to try to capture Isles of the Deep. With your Green society, you have a 75% chance of capture, which is pretty good. I do the same on the land, trying to amass a large army of captured native units.
From here, there are a number of ways to proceed:
1. Go for Doctrine: Loyalty next for Police State Society, to increase my support, since I am building lots of ships, speeders, and formers, and want to increase the number supported by each base to 4. However, if you do switch to Police State, don't forget to move your research back to 50%, since you will drop back to only +2 Eff.
2. Solve your support problem by clean reactors, which require no support. So research toward Bio-engineering.
3. Go for Industrial Automation for supply crawlers to help bring in resources and build secret projects.
4. If you have successfully amassed a large enough native army, look for a target for early conquest. It does not matter what their attack and defense level is since your native units will use psi combat anyway. Just try to make sure you have enough native units to finish the job once you start. The last thing you want is to cultivate an early enemy who has as his only goal not to win, but to keep you from winning.
5. ??? Insert favorite strategy here.
There are many alternative from the beginning. Some people would disagree with an early beeline and switch to Green as I propose. They would follow an entirely different path from the beginning. But this is honestly how I like to play Gaia, for what it is worth.
Best of luck!
- Mike
