In 2128, Cultists scientists have discovered the Secrets of the Human Brain! This major technological breakthrough pushed forward our research.
In the same year, tempted by opportunity, a Cultist scout unit attacked an ungarrissoned base of the Consciousness (heck, if University can make up with Morgan, so can I).
Something weird happened though: either I haven't played the game for some time or ... instead of entering the base and capturing the only alien artifact in it, my scout actually fought a battle with the artifact (odds 2800:2), captured it and pulled it out on its own square. Base lost one population but remained in posession of the Consciousness.
What's even stranger, despite having declared vendetta with Consciousness by this attack, it still says I'm treatied with them and when I contacted Aki, she even asked me to sell her a comm frequency.
Bug? PBEM pecularity?

Attacking AAs outside bases results in 'capture' which is not generally regarded as a hostile action therefore does not result in Vendetta.
Attacking AAs inside bases, if there's no other defender results in the same, due to bug.-- What history has taught us is that people do not learn from history.

Is it a forbidden bug or acceptable use in PBEM games? I hadn't speculated on this outcome. As long as Setroc hasn't done his turn, I could still redo mine. But it's kinda awkward that you'd not be allowed to seize an unguarded city if it contains an artifact.Comment

I have to correct myself.
At least that's what I believed until now. In my attempts to learn more about save files I found out that I could change settings in alphax.txt and actually profit from it in running PBEM games. I am able to move my formers twice the distance on roads by changing the "Movement rate along roads" rule in my alphax.txt from 3 to 6.Originally posted by Sperber

I think the alpha.txt that the game gets created with is stored within the turn file - otherwise you could really do some badass cheating in a PBEM game.
Heck ... you can even reveal the complete map in a running PBEM game by giving one of your basic techs that you already discovered the "reveals map" bit.
The more I learn about SMAC's internal workings, the less I like it. Basically, whoever wants to cheat, can do so very easily. What was Firaxis smoking at that time???

Same with civ2 and various other such games ive played.
Basicly anti-cheat stuff is more discouragement, anyone that wants to can cheat without detection. I too noticed that ability to cheat by alphax.txt, you can edit SE values to +5 industry for mega fast building, except when the other players load the game they have normal industry
FPS games are alot tougher though, for some reason. I rarely if ever find cheats for those, mostly its just external programs used to cheat.
Basicly you need to trust the people you are playing with. No anticheat system in existance can stop cheaters as good as playing with friends.
PS.People that dont like cheaters like to pretend its hard to cheat so ssshhhhhh
