I thought you were always likely to get a goodie from popping a pod inside the base area. I have had unpleasant native life happen more than once.

AFAIK, popping a pod next to a base yields a limited set of results, and can't yield worms. Popping a pod far from any base seems to yield increased numbers of worms when it yields worms. I don't know of any effects upon a pod outcome from just popping a pod near one of your bases.

You can pod bad results (i.e. worms, earthquakes) within a base radius.
