"The survey of our immediate landing area has gone well Colonel." smiled the new xo as FonnParr entered the de-briefing room, "It appears that this planet does contain some natural resources that we can use and I have found an ideal location for our Home Base".

"Home Base?" queried FonnParr, "I have no intention of staying here any longer than I need to, Captain"

"I agree Colonel, but we could be here a long time, something in this atmosphere is preventing us from getting airborne"

"You mean we can't escape the atmosphere?"

"No Colonel, I mean we can't even get off the ground!"

Turn passed (yesterday evening) to FonnParr.

Home-login problems solved today, so my next posting will follow much more quickly after I pass on my next turn.

FonnParr awoke to the sound of claxons going off and quickly jumped out of bed before realising that the alarms were scheduled to be tested this morning.
Still dressed in regulation nightware FonnParr opened the quarter's main door in to the east facing naturally lit corridor, preparing to blinded by the morning sun as had happened every morning for the past year - since Sparta Command had been established. "I really must get my quarters changed."

But it was still dark out - the artificial lighting had been temporarily replaced by the red allert lighting, as was custom for a military building but made it difficult for seeing anything that wasn't yellow or white.

The corridoors were full of frightened cadets and nervous officers scrambling to be at their post. A quick glance at her wrist-watch confirmed his fears - "This is no drill!"

                "Captain, Report!"

"We've encountered some sort of native life form - it's hideous - a huge mass of worms the size of boa constrictors. It attacked our unity rover before we even saw it. We managed to fight them off but not before it almost destroyed our rover. We have sent out our reconnaisance crew to see if there are any more and we should be hearing from them soon."

The alarms died down and the all clear was sounded to indicate the emergency was over for now.

"That must have been what Red saw on the screens in the lab with Yang" murmered the Colonel.

                "Sir?"

                "Never mind!"

"It looks like we've been lucky so far, but I wonder how long our luck will last..."

I received a possibly unfair bonus

A really odd thing happened to me on my last turn -- I moved a unit into unexplored territory and suddenly out of the blue, a highly experienced spore launcher appeared... in my possession! Anybody have any notion as to what's happening here?

Also in the weird department (besides the sometimes-rather-odd bonus terrain that I was probably not the only one to get), I discovered a fungal tower last turn... seemed a bit early to be discovering those. Oh well, 20 EC and a possible upgrade, here I come!

I have no idea what's with the spore launcher but IIRC, the fungal towers are there from the beginning. So I don't think it's unusual to meet one early on.

Some of you may have initially received or perhaps will receive pleasant surprise units of various types. Some of them are time-delayed and will activate at preprogramned times. In general, the pleasant surprises were provided to balance out some of the unpleasant surprises you might encounter in the short run, although some of them are intended to facillitate contact between factions.

The storyline for these units would be that they were various accidents and/or mistakes in Yang's early work in the xenobiology arena and/or the work of some or the more resentful biotechs originally shanhai'd by Yang when he left Unity.

"Prophet Blut0! We have discovered some sort of alien technology buried in the fungus! By the looks of it, there was an ancient civilization at one time on this planet!"

"You mean, we may not be alone on this planet? What does this alien technology look like?"

"Well sir, we don't really know what it is, our field scanners cannot penetrate the outer hull of this capsule, but the damn thing has wheels and steering controls! We're driving it back to base right now!"

"Is there anything else about this capsule that you can tell me?"

"Well, there is some type of message written on the outside of it. Our linguists have telemetry of the symbols......"

                                "Yes?"

"Well, sir, the only thing they have been able to decipher from the writing so far is 'Do not open until Christmas.' I'm sure we'll be able to make more sense out of it once we have it back to base."

                                Turn to USC.
