I raise land just about every game i play in. i dont use sea formers because they cost to much, though.
you take out ground vs. naval vs. air combat
There isnt really any naval focus in smac as it is, anyway. just landVSair

Manic, here is a very rough draft I did for your space theme. Let me know what changes/additions you'd like to see. I can change terrain, resources, and terraforming. Included is a texture file and a test scenario.Spacetest.zip

The Univ scenario file isn't recognized by the game. So unfortunately I can't test the texture properly with it. Do you use Mac?
Attached a screenie of the Map of Planet.
Funny how the right side of hills looks purple. I can't see in the texture file what could cause this.
Are the Dunes and Jungle meant as solar surfaces?
What would be especially great if for each of the terraformations that won't be used a special graphic could be placed to have a wide variety of planet looks in a premade maps. A bit like the Civ2 Master of Orion scenario.
However I'm not sure it's worth continuing this. Besides you no one seems interested.
Yes I use a mac. The dang thing didn't add a .sav to the end.
The purple is caused by the smac's natural lighting algorithom. I suspect there is a color overlay from the rainfall.pcx file. And yes the Dunes and the Jungle were solar surfaces. I left them in there because I didn't want to remove them the first draft.
And I can replace the resources and terraforming with planets. I also suspect that the cost line can be hidden by edit of the rainfall.pcx file. A well placed texture could help in hiding the land.
Finally can anyone really complain about something new? I mean SMAC has been out there for how many years now?

Should you build a special testing map first? Looks interesting. What are those animals doing in the ahem, terrain improvements?

Had a quick look at the files and the planets look great.
Also great to see that the coastlines can be worked away. When I had a look how the solar surfaces looked on one-tile islands, the surfaces themselves looked great, but the coastlines indeed took away from the good look.
I'll have a deeper look later. Now I'm laying the last hands on a SMAniaC update.
I thought civ 2 test of time was good for it. It has 4 maps, so things like planets on first, space on second and hyperspace on third would be possible. I do not have the CD though with me now. Maybe I gave it to my brother...
