You'll tend to only get biased answers here, but I think it still rocks hard.

Maybe a screen resolution problem?

I still play SMAX, and it has aged surprisingly well. The graphics look a bit hokey by today's standards, but the gameplay is as compelling as ever.
My computer uses Windows 8, but I play SMAX in a Windows 98 client of Oracle VM VirtualBox (which is free for download), and it runs smooth as silk. In fact, since VirtualBox can increase the effective RAM of the client operating system as high as 2 gigs (that was the highest Windows 98 could handle out-of-the-box), SMAX runs better than ever. A huge 256*256 map no longer suffers performance hits. It's pretty sweet.

I got a recommendation to try this game out, eventually I stuck it out, and it's too much of a habit to drop it.
I don't care for so much micromanagement, the A.I. is hopeless, but the game itself is pretty compelling. I'm used to hokey-pokey graphics (I play SimCopter off and on) so it doesn't really bother me.
I play it on a 10.4 Intel Mac, although given a little time that will change to a iMac G4. The SMAC Carbon app doesn't require the game CD to be inserted.
One of these days we ought to put together some kind of IP game, not sure if that will still work. I don't have the latest version(s)...the SMAC Carbon app shows 1.5.3b2, the OS 9 & earlier app shows version 1.4. I also don't play SMAC-X much -- I don't a number of the changes (like the sound when you close a base view window), the update drone/citizen faces, and other things.
An IP game with two principle rival factions, University+Spartans+Morgan versus Believers+Hive+Peacekeepers could be a pretty epic game. Basically some way of pitting two pacted major powers against each other: the Believers+Hive+Peacekeepers could be dangerous in the diplomatic race, produce untold numbers of military units, grow like viral bacteria on steroids, versus the technology and cash specialists protected by a fierce Spartan military. I'd probably pay to watch that.

Are Mac IP (not the samething as MacIP LOL) games compatible with PC IP?
Thread noted.
On that note I would slightly shudder at the fact of playing a 1v1. It might make my ineptitude stand out like a bad landmark. Although I'm playing on a Tiny map right now and have steamrollered the University and Believers. Big landmass + Garland Crater ftw.

yes, I'm that Googlie. I tried to logon, but I had forgotten password I used and Forums didn't recognize my e-mail address (I think maybe I used a different one back then)
Was without wifi for a couple of weeks, reduced to dial-up modem, so was using my AOL account. had a lot of favorites marked there, so started browsing the old Smax forums and here I am
