  • Why are my farmed moist squares only giving 1 nutrient?

I'm playing as the Hive, and experiencing painfully slow growth because most of my land squares are 'moist', and yet when I farm them they still only give me 1 nutrient!! Look:

Note that the 2 squares to the southwest, which are farmed and 'moist' give 1 nutrient; but so does the one square to the east, which is NOT farmed, give 1 nutrient!

Am I wrong in thinking that every farmed 'moist' square should give 2 nutrients? What could be causing this?

I should mention that this is inconsistent. In some other bases, some of my farmed 'moist' squares are giving 2 nutrients, whilst others are giving only 1. I can see no rhyme or reason to it.

Mines cause -1 food in that tile. Appendix 2 of the manual.

Well I'll be... I never noticed that before. Looks like mines are the ONLY terraforming change which will do anything to actually reduce any nutrient/mineral/solar output at all. BTW I have read the whole manual (I even have that appendix printed out), it's just hard to remember all of it.

Do never build farm and mines. If you need the production go with forrest.

What about rainy and rolling? Farm+mine would give 2 nutrients and minerals, but forest would only give 1 nutrient?

While this is true a farm+mine combination takes 12 turns to complete. A forest requires 4 turns. The farm+mine combo is quite simply not efficient enough.

            Moreover, forests give 1 energy.

Doesn't matter, forrest gives you one energy extra and with Tree farm you get 2 nutrients, 2 minerals and 1 energy.

But without tree farm, forest on rainy would only give you 1 nutrient, whereas farm+mine would give you 2, right?

Yes but you are still wasting turns terraforming, one of the old problem with the AI. You are better of with solar cells/farms or forrest because you will need that energy more than production. Just compare the alternative:
                  On rainy and rolling:
1, Farm+mine at max 2 nutrian + 2 minerals or 4 resources in total, and take you 12 turns to complete.
2, Farm+solar at minimum 2 (3 with the right tech) nutrian + 1 mineral + 1 energy (more if higher) or 4+ resources
3, Tree farm 1 nutrian + 2 minerals + 1 energy and can be improved to at least 3 nutrian + 2 minerals + 1 energy, cost only 4 turns and can spread.

waab: so are you saying the only places it's ever worth mining are rocky squares?

correct, but only after you have unlocked the tech which makes it possible to produce more than two minerals per tile.

If a rocky square is inside a city radius and low level (<1000m), then it's a borehole candidate (having Weather Paradigm helps).

Avalon: hmm, but you can mine them for 4 minerals. Wouldn't a better borehole candidate be a low-lying arid or moist square? You can only get 2 nutrients out of them, maybe 1 or 2 minerals, and 1 or 2 solar. Pretty lame.

It depends on the position of the base. If you have a number of rocky squares those arid or moist square is of better use to increase the supply of nutrians for the base. Condensor + farm will push those squares to 4 nutrian per square, enough too supply two workers with food. More important squares producing large amount of one kind of resource can easily be crawled which open up for the use of specialists or letting your workers focus on those boreholes.

Am I right to try and avoid crawling squares within a city's radius if possible? When crawling a square, you can only get one of the 3 resource types; not so bad for a square outside a city's radius which would otherwise be producing nothing, but you could be losing out on some resources that you would have been getting for the square had you had city workers working it.
