If anyone can confirm that an asteriod strike can hit the HQ. then let me know and i'll update the datalinks accordingly.

I am planning to add a random event entry to my next update of the datalinks (see sig). Here is the information I have uncovered so far, but I am sure there is room for improvement, so I am posting the draft here. If you see anything you would like added/reworded/removed just reply below. I...

can orbital defense pods/ flechette defense protect against this?
also, "Dust clouds will reduce global energy production for next ten years" does that give -1 energy output for all factions in all squares?
      The Prima guide says:
This never occurs before turn 75, and only if the base's faction is in first place. It destroys everything nearby, including the base itself, and makes a new "crater" a la Garland Crater.
Regarding the dust clouds: Yes, it is global = every faction, every base, every square = -1 energy.
Flechettes and Orbital Defense Pods are of no help against a rogue asteroid.
The destruction results in a Garland Crater centered on where the base was. All of its surrounding squares are destroyed. If there were any other bases within this area covered by the new crater, as is done in ICS, they, too, are gone.
I can't prove one way or the other whether a HQ can be hit by an asteroid. But, the HQ can be one of the extra bases lost if it is too close to the base that is hit.
I am on a mission to see how much coffee it takes to actually achieve time travel.

I do seem to recall The Hive being taken out by asteroid strike, when I was playing as the Hive. That was a long time ago and many computers hence, so I don't have the save game.

Maybe scient can answer the question if he looks at the code for random events. He should be able to tell if the base with the HQ is excluded or not. If the random event only hits the faction in first place, I can't see any reason why the HQ base should be excluded.

I'd think one of the purposes of the asteroid strike is to discourage a player from putting everything in one basket as well as make the game a little more interesting by hitting the number 1 player.

That was my thinking as well. Just becuase someone lost their HQ to an asteriod strike doesn't mean that it was the target of such an event, and I am not sure if it is possible.

However if it were possible I am reasonably certain we would have had quite a few posts whinging about the event, and I havent found any that describe a definate hit on the HQ by an asteriod strike.

Is it SMAC, or SMACX with the "fix"? It might have to do with that.

BTW, does Vista require the "fix"?

What do you mean by "fix"
I got scolded in Bold letters by Iluminatus.
                That makes me sad. :(

I can't use smilies in my signature that makes me even more sad. :(

The text that you have to put in the command line to turn off aspects of the game that don't get along with XP. Hang on, I'll find it.

Okay, I have bronchitis, a fever, and I'm spouting gibberish.

I'm talking about changing ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0 to ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1 in that .ini file to deal with newer CPUs.

Clearly that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. Sorry.
